Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. Charismatic Lexicon - Part One

Charismatic lexicon - Part One
by Dan Phillips

In the interests of communication and instruction, and because I'm here to help, I offer this lexicon. I'm calling it Part One because (A) I'm sure there'll be more, because (B) I'm pretty sure readers will supply some great stuff that (C) I will steal, publish here, and claim as my own.

First, then: the term as used by a Biblically-oriented Christian (BibC); then the Leaky Canon Charismatic equivalent (LC2). I paint, as I must, with a broad brush... but not that broad.

BibC: Culmination of millennia of revelation in a completed, wholly sufficient and closed Canon
LC2: Whatever. (Alternate: And then that happened...)

BibC: Feeling.
LC2: The Holy Spirit.

BibC: Hunch.
LC2: The Holy Spirit.

BibC: Silly passing thought.
LC2: The Holy Spirit.

BibC: Impulse, best to be rejected after a bit of wise and critical reflection.
LC: The Holy Spirit.

BibC: Testing by Scripture and rational examination.
LC2: Unbelief.

BibC: Walking in gracious, faith-driven obedience, which definitionally and consciously rests on the written Word alone.
LC2: Deism.

BibC: Living impulsively and irresponsibly, eschewing Biblical analysis and responsible decision-making, and blaming the whole mess on God.
LC2: Moving in the Spirit.

BibC: Undocumented anecdote allegedly done in a corner thousands of miles away and transmitted through the world's longest game of "telephone."
LC2: Proof that "the gifts" continue.

BibC: The undeniable absence of substantiated and globally-accepted claims to revelatory/attesting gifts among the Biblically orthodox from the first century until 1906.
LC2: "The man behind the curtain." (Alternate: "Look! A comet!")

BibC: The undeniable fact that modern instances of substantiated and globally-accepted claims to revelatory/attesting gifts among the Biblically orthodox depends on drastic reinterpretation of Scripture and playing fast and loose with the laws of evidence.
LC: (See above)

BibC: Prophecy is an explicitly Biblically-defined phenomenon in which God gives inerrant, binding, direct revelation to someone and assures that it is communicated as such. It is objectively verifiable.
LC2: Whatever you say it is. Except not verifiable or falsifiable.

BibC: Insisting on redefining the Biblical teaching about and descriptions of revelatory and attesting gifts so as to smuggle pale imitations into a time-frame some twenty centuries after their disappearance.
LC2: Non-negotiable essentials.

BibC: Affirming the all-over-the-Bible teaching of the sovereignty of God in salvation.
LC2: Totally negotiable, relatively minor.

...and one reverse:

LC2: A divine healing that undeniably proves all charismatic claims.
BibC: Answered prayer, God healing -- which all Christians have always confirmed and distinguished from the gift of healing.

Abusive Leadership Similarities: SGM-Mahaneygate v. Sandusky/Penn State

http://www.brentdetwiler.com/brentdetwilercom/2012/7/13/sovereign-grace-leaders-conceal-spiritual-abuse-like-penn-st.html

Sovereign Grace Leaders Conceal Spiritual Abuse Like Penn State Leaders Concealed Sexual Abuse

Friday, July 13, 2012 at 4:51PM

“In clear, calm, concise and unrelenting words, a report from an independent investigation into Penn State’s handling of the Jerry Sandusky sexual molestation case assigned blame in harsh terms to a wide-ranging group of high-ranking officials.

“From iconic football coach Joe Paterno, to now fired president Graham Spanier, to a detached Board of Trustees, the failures, lack of concern and ceding [giving up] of oversight, no one escaped blame in failing to stop Sandusky’s 15-year plus reign of terror in central Pennsylvania.”[1]

##

“Former FBI director Louis Freeh said Thursday that the most “telling” piece of information in his nearly eight-month investigation into the university’s handling of Sandusky’s misconduct is a 2000 incident in which a Penn State janitor witnessed the once-revered coach performing oral sex on a young boy in a university locker-room shower.

“The janitor who observed it says it’s the worst thing he ever saw,” Freeh said, outlining the explosive findings of his 267-page review, which found a complete failure of the university leadership to stop Sandusky. “He’s [the janitor] a Korean War veteran. … He spoke to the other janitors. They were awed and shocked by it. But, what did they do? They said they can’t report this because they’d be fired. They were afraid to take on the football program. They said the university would circle around it. It was like going against the president of United States. If that’s the culture on the bottom, God help the culture at the top.”[2]

##

Just like the insularly environment at Penn State University, the same sinful dynamics have been at work in SGM since 2004. Leaders around C.J. and people under C.J. haven’t reported spiritual abuse[3] or taken a stand “because they’d be fired.” Men like Harvey, Shank, Kauflin, Harris, Maresco, and Layman were “afraid to take on” C.J. Instead they “circled around” him. Going up against C.J. was “like going up against the President.” It still is and will continue so long as root issues go unaddressed and unconfessed.

I’d encourage each reader to look over “The Report of the Special Investigative Counsel Regarding the Actions of The Pennsylvania State University Related to the Child Abuse Committed by Gerald A. Sandusky.” Here is the link.

This is the kind of investigation and report, Ted Kober and Ed Keinath of Ambassadors of Reconciliation, should have done and produced for Sovereign Grace Ministries. Unlike former FBI Director, Louis Freeh, they refused to ” blame in harsh terms a wide-ranging group of high-ranking officials.”

“Over and over, Freeh’s damning report referred to a pervasive and damaging culture at Penn State where the levers of power were tightly controlled by four men — university President Graham Spanier, head football coach Joe Paterno, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz — whose repeated failure to deal with troubling allegations lodged against Sandusky always seemed to be directed by one goal: ‘to avoid the consequences of bad publicity.’”[4]

“The Freeh Group believes the interest of avoiding bad publicity allowed Sandusky to remain free, where he would go on to abuse additional boys and maintain near full access to Penn State facilities and the inner workings of the football program.”[5]

“It is more reasonable to conclude that, in order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the most powerful leaders at Penn State University – Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley – repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse from the authorities, the Board of Trustees, Penn State community, and the public at large. Although concern to treat the child abuser humanely [Sandusky] was expressly stated, no such sentiments were ever expressed by them for Sandusky’s victims.” (The Report of the Special Investigative Counsel Regarding the Actions of The Pennsylvania State University Related to the Child Abuse Committed by Gerald A. Sandusky)

The same is true with “the most powerful leaders” at SGM. There has been a “repeated failure to deal with troubling allegations lodged against” C.J. Instead, Harvey, Shank, Harris, and Loftness focused on making sure C.J. was treated “humanely” while they expressed “no such sentiments” for those who were treated inhumanely. There will be restitution by Penn State University for the eight victims of sexual who testified before the Grand Jury. There will be jail sentences for Sandusky, Spanier and Schultz. There will never be restitution by SGM to its victims and there will never be discipline for Mahaney, Harvey or Shank. That’s one reason I considered using a civil court in which to press my charges.

“During her time as the vice president for student affairs at Penn State from 2003-07, Vicky Triponey says she witnessed the power that Paterno wielded over the administration. Which is why nothing in the Freeh report about how the scandal was handled surprised her, she told USA TODAY on Thursday. Triponey says the reluctance of the school to act on Sandusky was more than just the fear of bad publicity, as Freeh suggested. ‘I think it’s about the image, the whole package of what Penn State football and Penn State became,’ said Triponey, now the interim vice president for student affairs at the College of New Jersey. ‘Penn State became … too big to fail. It wasn’t just that we can’t have bad press. It was, we have to protect this image that we’re perfect.’”[6]

The exact same thing is true about C.J. Scores of people have “witnessed the power” he “wielded over the administration.” For the past twelve years, C.J. has taken over or shut down numerous processes designed to address him. When that was not possible he had other people like Shank, Kauflin, Harvey, Loftness or Connolly do it for him.

The day after I released my documents on July 6, 2011, Harvey, Purswell, Cabaniss, Connolly, Gamache, Greasley, Loftness, Osborne, Prater, and Shank were installed on the interim Board. They were preoccupied with protecting C.J.’s and SGM’s image and immediately declared him fit for ministry and me guilty of slander. The mission “to protect this image that we’re perfect” informed their every decision.

That’s why justice was never served. That’s why all the deceit, lying, cover-up and cunning. That’s why the refusal to let me present my charges at an adjudication hearing. That’s why the plan to substitute a corrupt three panel review that was tightly controlled. That’s why a 400k report by AoR that didn’t deal with any of my evidence or charges. The love of reputation – wanting to protect the SGM image – corrupted good men. The praise of men became more important than the commendation of God.

Instead of Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley; we have Harvey, Loftness, Kober and Keinath. The Freeh report summates, “In short, nothing was done and Sandusky was allowed to continue with impunity.” The same is true with C.J. and many other leaders in SGM.

It is sickening that a group of secular lawyers has more discernment into the human heart without the Bible, than Christian pastors and Christian conciliators do with the Bible. Louis Freeh went to motive because motive drives men’s hearts. That’s where the evidence led him and that’s what he majored on in his report. SGM and AoR avoid some matters and condemns anyone who judges the “thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Even a novice detective knows you look for means, motive and opportunity when investigating a crime.

But Kober, Harris, and Loftness tell us we must not judge motives but that is not what the Bible teaches! It tell us not to judge hypocritically (log and speck), self-righteously (look to yourself), or unjustly (without evidence). This “judge not” theology is tantamount to telling Christians to throw away all objective standards, discernment, logic, and critical thinking ability. It is a recipe for disaster and a main reason false teachers, false prophets, and cults thrive in the United States (Matt 7:15-20).

Paul the apostle tells us “the spiritual person judges [discerns, evaluates, assesses, critiques] all things” (1 Cor 2:15). He continues, “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. ‘Purge the evil person from among you.’” (1 Cor 5:12-13) We are called to judge (i.e., assess and justly punish) evil doers in the church. What C.J. and other SGM leaders have done is evil.

Scripture teaches we can know a man’s heart and often know what is motivating him by observing his words and deeds (cf. Matt 3:7-19; 5:1-7:28; 15:16-20; Gal 5:19-20; 2 Tim 3:1-9; Heb 4:12; James 2:14-26) or by supernatural knowledge (1 Cor 14:24-25). This kind of judging is sanctioned, not prohibited, in Scripture.

Graham Spanier (president) and Tim Curley (athletic director) were both charged with perjury (lying to the grand jury) and failure to report a crime. They await trail this fall. No such trial awaits Dave Harvey, Steve Shank or the interim Board. No one has been held accountable for hundreds of lies starting with C.J.

“Over and over, Freeh’s damning report referred to a pervasive and damaging culture at Penn State where the levers of power were tightly controlled by four men” who were willing to lie and cover-up sexual abuse in order “to avoid the consequences of bad publicity” and “protect this image that we’re perfect.”

That is precisely what has been going on in Sovereign Grace Ministries and it is reprehensible that no one in SGM or Ambassadors of Reconciliation has been willing to stand up and say so! Sexual abuse and perjury are being judge in State College, PA. Spiritual abuse and lying are being covered-up and passively condoned in Sovereign Grace Ministries.

[2] Reported in “Freeh report blast culture of Penn State” by Kevin Johnson and Mary Beth Marklein at http://usat.ly/NkXm2s.

[3] “In the past, we have been easily satisfied with any response from C.J. But this time we must make certain it is the real deal. For instance, he must see issues like spiritual abuse. He will need your help. For example, when someone brings correction and we say you are proud or bitter without giving them the freedom to speak and don’t listen sincerely and humbly, we are abusing them. When people say they been adversely affected by our sins against them and we correct them for self-pity or tell them they are acting like victims, we abuse them. Or when we withdrawal our affection, project guilt, rally others against a person, distance ourselves, play the trust card, we abuse them. C.J. tends to react to labels like “lording” or “spiritual abuse” but they fit him. He just doesn’t connect the dots to see how they apply in his dealing with people. Similarly, lording it over others. That is, using other people to accomplish your own selfish agenda be it self-preservation or retaliation in many forms (mild to flagrant) towards people you don’t like.” (Bren Detwiler to Joshua Harris, “True Repentance,” Monday, June 27, 2011 4:00 PM)

SGM-Mahaneygate: "Meet the New Boss, Same Old Boss (CJ)"

Sovereign Grace Ministries: Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss
"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."
Chinese Proverb

Wikipedia article
Won't Get Fooled Again (Wikipedia)

Several months have passed since we last focused on Sovereign Grace Ministries. SGM, perhaps more than any other ministry espousing reformed theology, has held to STRICT complementarianism. Could it be that what has occurred in SGM is merely a foreshading of what is to come in other like-minded ministries?

For those who may be unfamiliar with SGM and what has occurred in this ministry, I highly recommend reading our post Mahaney / SGM – Unprecedented Rescue by the SBC?

It will clue you in on the strong ties between C.J. Mahaney, Al Mohler, and Mark Dever. There can be no question that Mahaney has Mohler to thank for rescuing him from a desperate situation. Last April we featured a post entitled AOR Report – Just How Unhealthy Is SGM?

The Ambassadors or Reconciliation (AoR) were hired by the SGM Board to render an 'impartial' assessment of Sovereign Grace Ministries. AoR delayed issuing its report and released it just prior to the Together for the Gospel conference held in April. From what we understand,Ted Kober of AoR met with SGM leaders in Louisville. Does anyone know whether there was an Ambassadors of Reconciliation booth at the T4G bookstore? Were Kober and Co. there peddling their services to all the pastors in attendance?

The AoR report was woefully lacking, and it's fairly obvious that they did not want to bite the hand that was feeding them. Here are a few highlights from their report:
"Because we met with such a small percentage of members (less than 1⁄2 of 1%), our observations may not accurately reflect the entire association of churches. Nevertheless, we offer these observations as part of our report." Ambassadors of Reconciliation Report, page 13
After reading the report, I understand why so many did not meet with the Ambassadors of Reconciliation. For those who did come forward, here is what AoR representatives reported:
"Those most upset displayed to us anger or bitterness or hatred toward SGM and their former church leaders for events that took place ten to fifteen years ago. Some were so hurt or angry that they displayed tears, raised voices, clenched fists, and other physical demonstrations of anger. As we talked about bitterness or anger, several responded with raised or strained voices to our team members insisting that they were not angry or bitter." (p. 18, AoR Report) "Of the 250 different individuals that provided input to AoR, about half were estimated to be no longer directly associated with SGM. These included past SGM leaders, pastors, and members of SGM churches. Considering that SGM has approximately 28,000 people in its churches, AoR received direct information from less than one half of one percent of the total current membership. Accordingly, AoR was unable to conclude that the input it received accurately reflects the majority of viewpoints from people currently in SGM churches." (p. 5, AoR Report)
In that post, we analyzed AoR's findings about SGM in light of questions Ronald Enroth poses in his book Recovering from Churches That Abuse, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Zondervan, 1994. Here is a list of those questions that helps one determine whether a church is healthy or unhealthy?

1. Does a member’s personality generally become stronger, happier, more confident as a result of contact with the group?
2. Do members of the group seek to strengthen their family commitments?
3. Does the group encourage independent thinking and the development of discernment skills?
4. Does the group allow for individual differences of belief and behavior, particularly on issues of secondary importance?
5. Does the group encourage high moral standards both among members and between members and non members?
6. Does the group’s leadership invite dialogue, advice and evaluation from outside its immediate circle?
7. Does the group allow for development in theological beliefs?
8. Are group members encouraged to ask hard questions of any kind?
9. Do members appreciate truth wherever it is found even if it is outside their group?
10. Is the group honest in dealing with nonmembers, especially as it tries to win them to the group?
11. Does the group foster relationships and connections with the larger society that are more than self-serving?

In recent weeks, Sovereign Grace Ministries has relocated to Louisville, Kentucky. Church planting certainly seems to be their focus, and it will be interesting to see whether there is a merger in the works between SGM and Sojourn Ministries.

Jim over at SGM Refuge has just provided an update about what is happening in SGM, and we thought we would share that information with our readers. Jim's post includes excerpts from a post over at SGM Nation entitled What the SGM Polity Process Tells Us About SGM.
Phil Sasser, pastor of Sovereign Grace Church in Apex, North Carolina – the SGM church Dee and I attended to hear C.J. preach – serves as SGM Polity Chair. He sent a letter to SGM pastors last month that states the following:
"Dear Fellow Pastors,

We have been encouraged by your response to the planned polity presentations in Louisville next month. Several pastors have indicated a desire to make a presentation, and we are looking forward to hearing from them. Many more have expressed a desire to listen to the polity presentations. In light of this, Tommy Hill and the SGM staff have found a suitable venue to accommodate additional seating for these presentations at the Legacy Hotel. As previously announced, the polity presentations will take place on July 10-11 and July 24-25. These presentations are only open to SGM pastors, the Leadership Team, and staff supporting the Committee. The Polity Committee has set aside two additional days (July 12 and July 26) in order to discuss and process what we’ve heard from you; these meetings will be with the Committee members only. SGM Board members have been invited to sit in on the Committee’s meetings, but only to listen. The presentations will begin at 8AM on July 10, so if you’re planning to attend we’d recommend you arrive in Louisville on the evening of July 9. At this point, we will assume that the July 24-25 meetings will have the same start time. If you wish to make a presentation, please send me your paper and indicate that you would like to present; and I will put you on the schedule. If you have a preference for when you would like to present, let me know and I will try to accommodate your request. Of course, you may elect to send a paper without actually making a presentation if you so desire… The Committee members will seek to make themselves available to talk to any Sovereign Grace pastor at any point in this process. The Committee’s work of formulation and writing will likely not begin until early August. We realize that we have established an aggressive timeline. At the same time, we are committed to doing a good job. If upon further review, we do not think that we can meet our objectives by the fall of this year, we reserve the right to adjust the timeline. Please know that we will do our very best to serve you in this process."
Here are two EXCELLENT observations (among others) over at SGM Nation that have been made in response to Sasser's letter:

"Truth be told – there was far too little time given to allow pastors to even consider the topic of polity in a meaningful way, much less, give themselves to study or write a paper. It's either poor management or cleverly designed process to minimize opposing views."
"SGM procrastinated on the polity issue for years and now they want to wrap it up in a matter of days, months… this is absurd – there's too little time for them to be in a hurry over something as important as this. This is about control – asserting it, maintaining it and propagating it for the next phase of SGM."

In case you're wondering what C.J. is up to, you might be interested to know that he will be returning to Kevin DeYoung's church this weekend to deliver the message on Sunday. He has aready preached there several times in the recent past. Of course, you remember Kevin DeYoung… one of the review panel members who judged C.J. fit for ministry (along with Carl Trueman and Ray Ortlund). For details about Mahaney's appearance at DeYoung's church, please consult Together for the Nonsense.
C.J. Mahaney's reputation is being rebuilt by all of his YRR colleagues, and many inside and outside SGM are sitting idly by and watching it happen.

Yes, the spin continues . . . May I recommend this post written exactly three months ago – Mahaney's Mind-Blowing Machination ?

Here is the most appropriate song I could find to describe what is currently taking place. Yes, meet the new boss, same as the old boss...

Anti-intellectualism: Uneducated C.J. Mahaney & Joshua Harris

Ignorant and uneducated people are really easy to deceive

We are moderating comments for a short time because we are drowning in spam. Don’t worry. We will post all non spam comments just give us a couple of hours. Sorry about this.
What do you get when sheep get a PhD? … Just stupid sheep with a PhD! Incredibly, J.D. Greear, a rising star in the SBC, included this question and answer in his sermon the day my husband and I visited The Summit. It appears this comment has been edited out of the sermon archive at the church web site.
C.J. Mahaney never got any degrees beyond high school. Joshua Harris was homeschooled and didn’t earn any further degrees. The Duggars have homeschooled their kids and the two oldest children, who are now college age, run a used car lot. Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis calls himself a creation “scientist”; yet he has never earned more than a bachelor’s degree. In case a reader might like to proclaim that Mahaney and Harris have created “The Pastor’s College” and by this are now educated, we at the TWW are not impressed. A nine-month education is not serious study in any field. This is only magnified by the fact that said attendees of the PC do not need a college education in order to enroll.
So what’s the problem? Quite simply, Mahaney, Harris, and others have not been tested in an objective manner. Mahaney calls himself a “pastor/athlete.” Just as Mr. Humility has named himself as head of SGM’s “apostolic team”, he has also named himself an athlete. To the best of our knowledge, his athleticism has not been tested. Did he play collegiate level sports in which he was part of a recognized team? Did he every try out for the Olympics? Mahaney simply declares himself an athlete. A real athlete moves up the ladder within sports. For example, my son who plays soccer has moved from recreational level soccer to what is called “Classic” soccer, which is achieved by both experience and tryouts. He now plays varsity high school soccer. To get to that level, he had to try out and advance through junior varsity soccer. He has elected not to try out for soccer in college. He has decided that it is neither his passion nor is he playing well enough for a college level team. He would laugh if you called him an “athlete.” He would claim to enjoy sports; he would claim to “mess around” with soccer; but he would never have the hubris to call himself a soccer athlete. He knows his limitations. He has played the sport and has been judged by his peers and his coaches.
Mahaney also regularly declares himself as one who studies Spurgeon, Calvin, the early church fathers, etc. He loves to quote such individuals and, as such, gives himself the cachet of understanding these vaunted individuals; however, he has never placed himself in a position to study under those who have made theology their life’s work. Those professors have gone through the Masters and Doctoral programs in which their very thoughts are closely judged by the tests they take and the papers they write. They must defend their thoughts during dissertations. And most have had to write and rewrite and revise their thoughts over years until they finally hold that degree that authenticates their years of study and hard work.
I have absolutely no idea just how deeply Mahaney has studied these theologians. It is far too easy to Google any of these guys and throw in a quote which Mahaney is famous for doing, especially in his books. Most folks take you at your word and far too impressed with those who quote “smart sounding” guys.
Ken Ham is able to give the appearance of being a “scientist.” The average person has no idea how difficult it is to obtain such a title in the real world. One must first earn a PhD. Then, one sets up a postdoctoral experience in which he/she conducts independent research. This research is turned into articles that are then published in journals such as Science and Nature. These journals have rigorous peer review to make sure that the data and conclusions stand up to scrutiny. Then, one has his/her own lab and his/her own grant money. Once again, Ham is guilty of (at the minimum) arrogance to include himself in these ranks. In the event there are members of the Young Earth (YE) crowd who are scanning for bias, Dr Kurt Wise, in the YE group, comes closest to matching this description. This is NOT a discussion on creationism.
The value of academic training is that it forces an individual to consider opposing views, to defend one’s point of view, and to prove that one understands what one is reading. Papers and debates give professors the ability to judge, challenge, or congratulate the budding student.
Mahaney has close contact with the likes of Al Mohler and John Piper. Shouldn’t that keep him on track? Our answer is a resounding, “No.” There is a good reason for this. Take, for example, Mahaney’s aversion to foreign missions. Approximately ten years ago, John Piper subtly chastised him for his lack of concern for missions. Funny thing about that, however. Nothing has changed whatsoever in Mahaney’s abysmal lack of appreciation for missions in the last ten years. In fact, this “apostle” considers his own churches “missions.” These are the ones he plants or “adopts” in areas with wealthy people and well established churches.
Why hasn’t Mahaney responded to Piper’s challenge to be more missional? Perhaps it’s because they speak at the same conferences and endorse each other’s books which points to the question of MONEY. Also, pastors appear to loathe criticizing other pastors which causes us to theorize that the ‘old boys’ clubs (women rarely allowed) is alive and well within Christendom.
When people become dependent on each other for income and notoriety, it is quite easy to overlook minor issues such as “calling each other on the carpet”. Mahaney is friends with Al Mohler, John Piper, Mark Driscoll, John MacArthur, Ligon Duncan, and the members of The Gospel Coalition and the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals — organizations to which he belongs. What amazes me is that Mahaney is quite cozy with the seminaries in the SBC, especially Southern Seminary. Heck, Mahaney makes graduates of SBTS, where his buddy Mohler is president, go through his nine month “Bible light” Pastors’ College (PC) since he obviously believes his college’s training trumps that of a real seminary. But, guess what? The PC gets people like Wayne Grudem to teach there (obviously, very part-time) so it must be OK, right? Hmmm, how much does he pay these guys to do this? Better yet, we would love to see how much money Mahaney has made Piper over the years to get him to shut up on the lack of missions and the allegations of abuse within Sovereign Grace Ministries.
In fact, it is most disconcerting to see that J.D. Greear recommends Mahaney’s books, Humility and Living the Cross Centered Life, on his blog. The latter illuminates Mahaney’s view on sin. In fact, it is his view of sin that deeply troubles us. We believe that Mahaney’s lack of education may have led to his conclusions. We also believe that Mahaney’s method of control of the people in his churches stems from his limited view of atonement. We also might suspect that it is Mahaney’s conclusions that cause folks like Greear to approve of Living the Cross Centered Life.
Here is what we mean. Mahaney stops the Christian walk at the cross. He meditates on our sin and how we are so sinful, yet he rarely understands the depths of our sin. He points to the need for the cross as his proof. Yet, he forgoes mentioning what actually happened on the cross. Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners. But, He also said that “It is finished.” Mahaney gives short shrift to the resurrection and the fact that we are now, “Free, free, indeed.”
“Free, indeed” means that Jesus calls us all into the priesthood of the believers. This is a scary thing to control freaks like Mahaney. Don’t believe that he is? Just read the myriad of survivors’ sites that tell tale after tale of control and pain. So many blogs, so much smoke, so there must be fire! (Try just one – sgmsurvivors.com).
We believe that Greear may be cut from the same cloth. Let’s revisit the quote at the top of this post. Greear preaches in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, which is home to Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State and other colleges and universities as well as the home to great high tech and pharmaceutical companies such as SAS and Glaxo. It is also home to the greatest college basketball on the planet and, may we say, C.J., you ain’t no Michael Jordan. The Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) has the highest concentration of PhDs in the country! The great Francis Collins (Christian, head of the National Institite of Health, and leader of the Human Genome Project) trained here, Duke and UNC conduct world class, cutting edge research in many areas such as oncology and cardiology.
Greear is letting all of us know that we are nothing more than a bunch of sinful sheep, and it doesn’t matter how smart we are. How very sad! It is worth noting that The Summit is a “young” church in more ways than one. The congregation has a large constituency of college students who love to hear their “shepherd” put their professors in their place! It’s highly unlikely that many professor types attend his church.
God gave us our intellects to explore this world that we have been given. Greear, however, wants to put us in our place. We are just dumb sheep. But, he is the pastor and he somehow gets a pass on this “dumb” issue. Therefore, he can let all of us know just how sinful we, the sheep, are so we better shut up and listen to him. Oh, and don’t try and tell him how to run his church.
J.D., there is a better way to say this, but perhaps it is more threatening to you. Yes, we are all sinful; but so are you. God has given each one of us the following: a mind, reasoning ability, compassionate hearts, the Holy Spirit, forgiveness, and love. Together, as the community of the forgiven, we all bear the mark of God, and believe it or not He speaks through ALL of us.
So, instead of denigrating the calling that God has given to those who have been called to higher learning, why don’t you rejoice in the blessing that God has brought such gifted people into your midst and figure out how to use their gifts to further the kingdom? Did you know that there is a science professor at UNC-CH who has formed a student/faculty Christian fellowship that meets once a month for encouragement and evangelism. Also, the next time, include yourself, front and center, in the dumb sheep with a PhD. Or, do you believe that you are just a bit better or have been given a secret gift that eludes the rest of us sheep?
TWW highly recommends Mark Noll’s seminal book, The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind. Noll published this book in 1994, and his words resonate in 2010. In fact, was he a prophet exhorting us to a great calling? He says that Christians have dumbed down the Gospel, have entered a holy huddle, and have eschewed the universities and the arts, leaving education to those who do not follow the One Who created our minds. We reap the consequences of this in a society that increasingly forgets the role of faith in the public square. Why not? Christians have deserted rigorous study and have settled for silly little sermons like Ed Young, Jr.’s sermon on “Sex for Seven Days.” EGADS, no wonder the world looks down on our intelligence. Then Christians complain that atheists run the universities. Well, who among them studied enough to stop this from happening? This public square will not listen to uneducated men like Ken Ham and C.J. Mahaney. They respect those who have done the work to achieve higher education. Folks like Francis Collins and Dr. John Lennox of Oxford have done the work and have earned the right to be heard.
Christians such as Francis Collins, Michael Card (who writes a Christian music and is working on a PhD in Classical Literature) , Walt Kaiser (PhD from Brandeis University and President of Gordon Conwell), and many, many others have studied hard and opened themselves up to peer review and criticism. We admire those within Christian circles who have had the courage to submit their views and thinking to objective scrutiny within the institutes of higher learning where they know they will be challenged.
We join with Dr. Noll and others to implore Christians in positions of prominence not to denigrate higher learning. In fact, we believe that folks like Mahaney should be encouraging higher education. We also believe that Christians need to enter into all aspects of our society and show the world that are not afraid to enter the debate on any level. Richard Dawkins might think Christians are delusional, but he must admire Francis Collins who has achieved more in the world of science than most any other scientist alive. And this has earned him the right to be heard.
Just to show how easy it is to pretend like we know all about Spurgeon and Galileo, we leave you with some Googled quotes. Are you impressed, yet?
“The doorstep to the temple of wisdom is knowledge of our own ignorance”.
- Charles Haddon Spurgeon
“I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.”
- Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

Baptacostal Hillbilly Mahaney Re-Ascends to Episcopal Monarchy

The Baptacostalist Hillbilly, C. J. Mahaney, survives and his hand-selected and sovereign Board returns Mahaney to permanency on the same board.  We are not, in the least, surprised by a breakdown in a relationship between Mahaney and Harvey, the hapless and troubled Board member who governed SGM during Mahaney’s temporary exile.  Further, the relationship between Mahaney and Harris is over too.  Mahaney embodies the attributes, en toto, of a classical narcissist under the DSM-IV.  Anywho, here’s the latest on the Hillbilly.  The non-Confessional Baptyerians love him, as do other Ana

A Divided Board Makes C.J. Mahaney Long Term President

Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 3:19PM

To the SGM Board of Directors:

John Loftness (Chairman), Paul Buckley (Vice Chairman), Ron Boomsma, Craig Cabaniss, Ian McConnell, Mickey Connolly, Ken Mellinger, Al Pino, Phil Sasser

You need to be honest with the SGM pastors and churches regarding your vote in Annapolis last month to return C.J. as the permanent President of SGM. You made this decision without their input or knowledge. You must also tell them a majority were in favor but a minority were opposed like Paul and Ian.

Furthermore, you must make known that the majority prepared a false statement for public release saying there was unanimity on C.J.’s return but this did not occur because the minority opposed such a deceitful statement pledging to go public and correct the misinformation if released.

This is not a new occurrence. The same kind of deceitful activity occurred with the interim Board when they presented decisions as unanimous when in fact it was not the case. Craig and former Board Members like Aron Osborne and Pete Greasley will tell you so if they are honest. Contact them.

You should also know that C.J. and Dave have had a falling out because C.J. feels Dave did not defend him adequately and did not denounce me, Larry Tomczak, etc. more harshly. It is a sad fact that most of you don’t know about this breakdown in relationship. I’ve encourage Dave to be honest with you and not allow C.J.’s mistreatment of him to go unaddressed. It is a continuation of the sinful patterns in C.J.’s life already identified and acknowledged.

You should also know that C.J. and Ken Sande have had a falling out. Ken confronted C.J. on his deceit, etc. and C.J. sinfully reacted by effectively dumping Ken as a friend and counselor. Their relationship is fractured but C.J. has not informed you of this reality either. Therefore, contact Ken since you are responsible for C.J.’s measuring C.J.’s grow in grace. As I’ve said many times, if you correct, disagree, or oppose C.J. in any significant way you will suffer for it. Scores and scores of leaders have experience this harsh reality over the last 30 years.

You need to provide much more accountability for the Leadership Team. For instance, Board Members don’t know how or if Dave Harvey’s responsibilities have been cut back so he can get his priorities right and focus on his family. This was your responsibility to define. And Board Members don’t know if Dave has made changes in managing his family or how each of his children are doing? There has been no accountability from the Board and yet the issues in Dave’s family are ever so serious.

Or how about compensation packages? It is not encouraging that Board Members don’t know what C.J.’s salary and benefits are at this point in time. That should have been divulged and discussed already. So too a reduction in salaries and benefits for all the Leadership Team since the cost of living is lower in Louisville. Why has this gone unaddressed?

Last July, Tommy Hill promised me all of this would be addressed by AoR in their report. It was not. You need to release the new compensation packages for the Leadership Team. People should see the new numbers in comparison to the old numbers so they know the Board is serious about addressing excesses and walking in the light with its donors.

Lastly, what has C.J. (and other leaders in SGM) specifically done to implement the recommendations from the Three Panel Reviews last December and the AoR report from April? I don’t know of any attempts to follow up with anyone in my large relational network. There have been no attempts at reconciliation to my knowledge. You must chart C.J.’s efforts and give occasional reports on his progress. The same is true for all executive employees of SGM (e.g. Bob Kauflin) and former employees (e.g. Gene Emerson). There must be accountability because C.J. has a long history of ignoring recommendations or assignments given to him for reform and reconciliation.

Please let me know you will address all these matters in a forthright way. In particular when will you inform SGM that you have already voted to reinstall C.J. as the permanent President of SGM and deceitfully planned to put out a public relations message that was untrue.

Regards,

Brent

Post Script

I literally finished writing my last sentence when I received your post, "Board Update: Defining Sovereign Grace Leadership; Positioning C.J. Mahaney as President."

Let me quickly respond to this one statement.

“As we take these steps, it is important for you to know of the Board’s strong endorsement of C.J. to continue in this role of President. C.J. was the object of an enormous amount of gossip and slander during this past year, and that has damaged his reputation, undermined his ability to lead, and created an atmosphere of suspicion in some quarters of our family of churches…. This comprehensive process has clearly confirmed C.J.’s fitness to lead and his exceptional character as he has graciously endured major trials.”

As a Board you continue to act on your own. Even this release of information was forced upon you because the word was getting out to SGM pastors that you made a decision for C.J. to return as President two weeks ago without their knowledge and without their input. This press release is a piece of damage control. How can you make a secret decision to install C.J. as the long term President when C.J. promised he would only return as the short term President and not enter into discussion with the SGM pastors before doing so. Your independence is incredulous. You don’t want their input or their accountability.

You also continue to lie. You know there was not unanimous support for C.J.’s return as President when you voted at the June 11-14 retreat in Annapolis! You conceal that in this communique instead of being honest and telling everyone the Board was divided. Instead, you followed through on your deceitful presentation that the Board was united in this decision. The hardline majority persuaded the soft minority to go along with the ruse even though men like Paul and Ian promised to expose it. Unbelievable! No one should trust any of you. This is just more SGM spin and deceit.

Furthermore, you are completely mistaken when you say C.J. was “the object of an enormous amount of gossip and slander.” That is without foundation. I’ve been his main accuser and everything I’ve written is rooted and grounded in fact. Show me where I’ve made a point without providing evidence? That is why you didn’t allow me to present my case against C.J. before objective jurors and threw together the corrupt Three Panel Review where my participation was block and confined. There has been no comprehensive review of C.J. or SGM as you assert. My charges have never been heard or evaluated. C.J. is not the object of gossip and slander; he is the object of countless witnesses whose testimony is right and true. He should not be a sr. pastor let alone the President of SGM.

You have now drawn a line in the sand. You dismiss churches with concerns for C.J. when you say gossip and slander “created an atmosphere of suspicion [regarding C.J.] in some quarters of our family of churches.” That is so bogus. What has been created is an atmosphere of godly discernment pertaining to C.J.s long standing patterns of serious sin against many people. It is just like you as SGM to silence pastors and churches by labeling them “suspicious” when all they are doing is asking hard questions (which you and C.J. won’t answer), requiring genuine accountability and calling for personal and corporate reform. Once again you play the gossip and slander card in order to disparage critics and prevent them from knowing the truth or speaking the truth. You love to censure people and control their lives while you protect the guilty.

As a Board it is clear from this statement today that you are committed to castigate people instead of listening to people – pastors included. You express no concerns for C.J., yourselves or SGM in this post. None. You focus all your attention on the supposed evils of others. Nothing has changed. The SGM elite remain superior to all others and therefore blame everyone else while you totally vindicate C.J. You present C.J. as the victim rather than the victimizer – as the abused rather than the abuser. You have it all backwards.

Like the old and interim Boards (with the exception of Joshua Harris) you’ve determined to take no responsibility for the systematic problems that exist in SGM and especially its top leaders. Only those leaders and churches who leave the movement in the days ahead have really learned from the past. No one should accept C.J. as President on the basis of his character but also because he is breaking his firm promise not to return in this capacity. His determined decision was based upon the counsel of many other leaders, his own limitations in gifting, and his primary calling as a pastor and preacher. You skip over all his past statements about why he would not return as President. As we know so well, it is nothing for C.J. to go back on his word. I think of his three promises to provide a thorough response to my documents and his promise to make a confession to the SGM pastors at the Pastors Conference last year. He breaks promises as quickly as he makes promises. Here are his words.

“In light of all of this, here is how I think I can best serve you in the days ahead: as I step back into the role as president, I will do so only temporarily. I think it would be wise for SGM to have a new president who has gifts better suited to serve Sovereign Grace in this next season…. After supporting the [interim] board through these important transitions, I hope to return to what I believe is my primary calling from God – pastoral ministry and the pulpit. This plays a significant role in why my return as president is temporary. Let me explain. I think preaching and pastoral ministry are where grace is most evident in my life and where my leadership is most effectively expressed. Others seem to agree. And I think I have neglected this call to preach for a number of years as I have endeavored to serve as president. Over the past five years many faithful friends have brought this concern to my attention and impressed upon me the importance of preaching as a primary means of my serving and leading. However moved I was by their concerns and encouragement, the many responsibilities of the presidential role would quickly preoccupy me again and the effect of their counsel would subside. Over the past six months I have seen more clearly than ever the wisdom of their counsel. So I think the most effective way I can serve Sovereign Grace is by planting a church and leading a local congregation through faithful expository preaching and teaching…. I simply can’t wait to get started. And I can proceed into this future confidently when our new board and president are in place. So that is what I am returning to do and why my return as president will be temporary.” (C.J. Mahaney, A note to those in Sovereign Grace Ministries, Ja

The fact remains that C.J. is disqualified from ministry in the sight of God and in light of holy Scripture. No one in the history of SGM has ever been treated with such favoritism. Ed Keinath from AoR told people he and Ted Kober were gravely concerned for the “blind loyalty” shown C.J. They had each of you in mind.

I wasn’t planning on posting my initial correspondence above but it is now necessary to do so. I’ve also include my email to Dave Harvey from this morning.

Subject: Falling Out with C.J.
Importance: High

Hello Dave,

I’ve been told about the break down in your relationship with C.J. because he feels you did not defend him adequately and did not denounce me, Larry T, etc. more harshly. This comes as no surprise. You need to bring this to the immediate attention of the entire Board to whom you and C.J. are now accountable. Be honest with them. Don’t cover up for C.J. Put an end to the enablement. You must tell the Board about this mistreatment of you. Dave, you know full well that nothing has changed with C.J. Your assessment and my assessment from 2004 are as relevant today.

Dave’s Assessment

To correct CJ, or to challenge his own self-perception, was to experience a reaction through e-mails, consistent disagreement (without seeking to sufficiently understand), a lack of sufficient follow-up and occasionally, relational withdrawal. Along with this, CJ was poor in volunteering areas of sin, temptation or weakness in himself.

Brent’s Assessment

1.     Can become resentful, distrustful or withdraw when he feels misunderstood, judged, or sinned against by others.

2.     Can judge or prematurely come to conclusions about others based on limited or incomplete information.

3.     When correcting or disagreeing can communicate his assessment or perspective too strongly or categorically.

4.     Can lack gentleness and not perceive the unhelpful effect of his words, actions or decisions upon an individual.

5.     Can be difficult to correct and help because he often disagrees with or has a different perspective on illustrations.

6.     Infrequently makes us aware of specific sins or the correction others are bringing to him.

I have little hope you and C.J. will be transparent with the Board. I imagine this will be glossed over and made to sound like a trifle when it is serious. Please turn the corner on a new lease in life but doing what is right.

Regards,

Brent
