The Reverend Donald Lyman Veitch, age 85, died on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at Mount Clemens General Hospital. Rev. Veitch was born on November 24, 1924 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; he was the son of Morley Lyman Veitch and Margaret Helen Veitch. Mr. Veitch served in His Majesty's Canadian Navy from 1943 until 1946. Rev. Veitch was educated at Malvern High School, Toronto. Following World War II, he graduated in 1947 from Victoria College, University of Toronto; he attended Knox Presbyterian College (Seminary), University of Toronto in 1949 and graduated from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Hamilton, Massachusetts in 1950. After seminary he married June Tonkin on May 27, 1950 in Oshawa, Ontario. They were married nearly 60 years before his death. In May 1953, Rev. Veitch came to Detroit and pastored the Marantha Baptist Church on Morang Drive in Detroit for 41 years, retiring in 1994. Pastor Veitch was a loyal Churchman, an avid reader, and a devoted family man. He enjoyed reading theology and was interested in politics. His children remember growing up with a father who played with his kids and was involved in their activities. But, serving his Lord as a Minister of the Word was his full time vocation and took up much of his time. "Faithfulness" is the one word his family attributes to him. Rev. Veitch is survived by his wife June; children, Rev. D. Philip Veitch (Sharon), Mark (Robyn), Pam Watson (Dan) and Cheryl L. Mozdrech; fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandson; and three sisters, Geraldine McDowell, Dorothy Bender and Ruth Melnychuk. Coffee service is provided. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Bruce Post #1146, 28404 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores, MI 48081. As a WW II veteran, Rev. Veitch supported the VFW and any contributions to them would be appreciated. |
