Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. Hosea, Mindlessness, Braindeadness & Lent 2014

Mindlessness (inattention, lack of due diligence, lack of theological inquiry) in 8th century (BC) Israel and in 21st century Churchmanship. Of course, context, context, context in terms of Hosea and Isaiah, but this verse exemplifies the larger socio-theological context.  Always context, but this verse is a fair summary.

Whoa! This one shall inform the thinking in Lent 2014, "mindlessness." We quote from Shakespeare's Bible, the 1599 Geneva Bible, the version that ruled England for 100 years.

Hosea 5:4-5
1599 Geneva Bible (GNV)

4 They will not give their minds to turn unto their God: for the spirit of fornication is in the midst of them, and they have not known the Lord.

5 And the [a]pride of Israel doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim fall in their iniquity: Judah also shall fall with them.

Footnotes:
a. Hosea 5:5 Meaning, their contemning of all admonitions.
