Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. 1 Mar: 1662 Book of Common Prayer Re: Mr. (Abp) David

1 March. 1662 Book of Common Prayer, Mr. (Abp) David. http://www.eskimo.com/~lhowell/bcp1662/notes/saints.html#David . We’ve amended this somewhat.

David, Archbishop. Said to the son of a Welsh prince, founder and abbot of a monastery. Allegedly, he then was drawn to take “victorious part in the Pelagian controversy.” What does that mean and what are the documentary sources?

Allegedly, he was made Archbishop of Caerleon. He allegedly “removed the see far west to the Menevia (St. David's), possibly in connection with some mission to Ireland.” His death is fixed at different dates from A.D. 541 to 601. (The earliest extant account of him was not written till 500 years after his death, and “has many legendary elements in it”). He is remembered, what little may be said of him, on 1 March.

So, why is this the Prayer Book?

Why hasn’t the 1662 BCP been upgraded and updated? The 1979 has been, but it has included some unsavory characters like Mr. Laud and Mr. Wesley.

Next year, we must just hit the delete button. Probably an honorable Christian gentleman and we wish to respect that, but no one uses the 1662 BCP anymore and no one appears to know who this is...historically. We'll see.

Bring in the bleach, please. Wipe the boots at the front door.
