Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. Pro-abortionist Biden/Pelosi Take Communion at Papal Installation

YOU’RE NOT HELPING

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013 | Uncategorized

Roman Catholic Church? If you’re reading this, and I know you are, I’ve got some news for you. While I’ll not yet rule anything out, the chances of my swimming the Tiber just took a pretty substantial hit:

Vice President Joseph R. Biden and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi both received Communion during the Mass to celebrate the installation of Pope Francis in spite of their pro-choice position on abortion.

The vice president’s office confirmed Tuesday night that both he and Mrs. Pelosi took Communion during the Mass at St. Peter’s Square in Rome.

Some Catholics argue that politicians whose positions on abortion and contraception conflict with church teachings should not receive communion.

“Vice President Biden and Nancy Pelosi should certainly not receive Communion, either at the papal installation or anywhere else. Communion means ‘union,’ and they are not in union with the church on the most fundamental moral issue of the right to life,” said the Rev. Frank Pavone, founder of Priests for Life, a U.S.-based Catholic anti-abortion organization.

In the Vatican’s defense, I guess it’s difficult to expect the Holy See to cause a public controversy at an event like this one which was televised worldwide. Lovers of the Catholic Church like the American secular media, National Catholic Reporter staffers, Andrew Sullivan and Jim Naughton would have screamed in outrage while Joan Chittister would have gotten something up somewhere about how embarrassed she was today.

That said, some Vatican staffer should have gone over to Nanner McBotox and Goofy Braindeadington before the service started and told them privately that if they went up to receive Communion, it would not be given to them and here’s why. After all, if the defenders of the faith won’t defend the faith, what use are they?
