We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. SGM-Mahaneygate: (Detwiler) The Drama Continues in Baptacostal Land

C.J. Mahaney, Co-defendant in Child Sex Abuse Case Against Sovereign Grace Ministries

http://www.brentdetwiler.com/brentdetwilercom/2012/11/9/my-appeal-to-the-pastors-of-covenant-life-church-for-biblica.html

My Appeal to the Pastors of Covenant Life Church for Biblical Transparency
On Wednesday, I wrote the Covenant Life pastors appealing for biblical transparency. I requested they lift their restrictions on members of the church that required silence regarding the pastors’ reasons for recommending separation from SGM. I also appealed to the pastors to provide clear biblical and ethical categories regarding their reasons for leaving. I’ve not heard from them. If I do, I will post their response. Here is my letter.

Subject: An Appeal to Lift Sanctions

To Joshua and the other brothers, who serve as fellow pastors.

I will be brief in my appeal for biblical transparency.

After our crisis intervention with C.J. in August 2004, Joshua, Grant, Kenneth and Bob, enabled C.J. to continue in his sin by implementing no accountability, requiring no personal confession, cutting off the apostolic team, turning against me, and supporting C.J.’s ongoing abusive patterns of sin. I suffered greatly as a result.

Fast forward. In June 2011, I appealed that you fulfill your biblical responsibilities and rebuke C.J. You refused. That is one reason I was forced to send out my documents to the SGM pastors the following month. You abandoned your duty and left me alone to contend with C.J. and SGM. See In Need of a Corporate Rebuke – An Appeal to the Covenant Life Elders (June 17, 2011).

In August 2011, I appealed to you again. You remained silent and unwilling to take a stand. See The Need for Crisis Intervention by the Covenant Life Pastors (August 29, 2011).

In June 2012, Josh told CLC that C.J. was not disqualified from ministry. That he was taking a “balanced position.” I wrote all of you about this unbiblical assessment and offered to drive to Gaithersburg to talk about it in private. I received no response or explanation for Josh’s compromised position.

“Some of you have told me that you think we should have publicly disciplined C.J. or should speak against him serving as a pastor. I disagree with that. I do not believe C.J. is disqualified from ministry. And so I wish him success in his new church plant and pray that he will prosper…. So I find myself in what I think is a balanced position—not agreeing with C.J.’s strongest critics or his most vocal supporters.” (Joshua Harris, CLC Members’ Mtg., June 28, 2012)

See C.J. Still Not Qualified to Lead Sovereign Grace Ministries on the One Year Anniversary of Sending Out “The Documents” (July 6, 2012).

On many other occasions, I have written you. On many other occasions, you have been unwilling to speak out and take a stand for righteousness. Over the past 8 years, you have failed to hold C.J. accountable. Your silence and inaction has allowed him to continue in his sinful patterns without interruption to the detriment of so many precious lives.

Gentlemen, I have treated you equitably; both commending you for evidences of grace and correcting you for departures from Scripture. I have not been partial in your favor or impartial in my judgments. Once again I come to you on the basis of Scripture.

Joshua, here is what you said at the Members’ Meeting on Sunday night.

“I realize my request to keep these matters “in house” is generating a lot of questions.

“The reason we made this request is we believe members deserve to understand our reasons for leaving SGM but we’re not interested in publicly criticizing SGM. Leaving SGM (if the congregation affirms the direction) is criticism enough. We don’t think these internal reasons need to be broadcast on the blogs for the whole world to read.

“But we’re not trying to keep it a secret that we’ve presented to the congregation that we think we should leave SGM and will be taking a vote on this. It’s fine for people outside our church to be aware of this.

“And I don’t think Jesse Jarvis’s letter is a good reference point for all this. If I understand it correctly, Jesse never intended for his letter to be made public. He shared it with a few pastors and then one of them sent it to Brent without his permission.

“My desire in all this is to honor Jesus. So I ask, “Is the gospel served by the whole world hearing about the details of our concerns for SGM?” I don’t think so. I think these are matters for our church to work through in making this decision.” (Joshua Harris, Member’s Meeting, Nov 4, 2012)

Josh, I am glad your prohibition is generating a lot of questions. It should because you have imposed an order upon the members of Covenant Life Church that is contrary to Scripture. You do not have a right to bind the consciences of members in this manner. You have overstepped your boundaries as a shepherd because you are requiring obedience to a directive without biblical sanction.

First, there is no harm to the gospel if people know why CLC is leaving SGM (I believe the opposite is true). Second, it is not slander to provide people outside CLC honest explanations for why the pastors have proposed such a monumental course of action. Third, it helps all the churches in SGM to know your reasons for leaving.

But let me go further. I believe you have a biblical responsibility to make known your reasons for severing ties with SGM if they are of an ethical nature. I assume your reasons for leaving are not related to church governance since the SGM polity proposal has yet to be voted upon. It could be rejected.

Moreover, if you are recommending departure to CLC as a matter of preference, then such amoral reasons should be provided less people assume otherwise. But if you are leaving over abusive practices and unethical conduct, you have a biblical responsibility to make that clear. Let me be more specific.

In the case of personal, sin here is how we are to proceed.

Matt 18:15-17

[15] “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. [16] But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ [17] If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.”

The first step is confidential. It is one on one. The second step is confidential. It involves 2 or 3 people. The third step is public. The entire church is told. The fourth step is public. The world is effectively told. This protects the gospel from harm. The watching world knows the church is serious about sin and avoids the charge of being hypocritical when handled in this manner.

In the case of an elder’s sin, here is how we are to proceed.

1 Tim 5:19-20

[19] Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. [20] Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning.

The first step is assumed in the passage. The elder has been approach in private. The second step is assumed. Two are three have gone to the sinning elder in private. The third step is introduced by Paul to Timothy. A public rebuke of the elder must occur in front of the church so the other elders don’t think they can get away with the same kind of hypocrisy. This protects the reputation of the gospel because leaders are not treated with partiality or favoritism. The fourth step is not referenced in the text.

C.J. is the President of Sovereign Grace Ministries, not just a local elder! That has been true since 1990 when he assumed the position. If he were only a pastor, no effort need be made to tell his sins and rebuke him publicly outside the local church. But that is not the case with C.J. In the New Testament, local leaders were reproved locally. Extra-local leaders were reproved locally and extra-locally. Such disciplinary action was never avoided because an apostle or “President” wasn’t “employed” by a particular church.

Take for example Paul’s rebuke of Peter. Paul included it in his epistle to all the churches in the region of Galatia. He did this even after Peter repented of hypocrisy. Paul wanted all the churches to know about the incident and learn from the incident. That action protected the gospel. It put a lot of people on notice. Paul was not slandering Peter, he was being honest about Peter.

Galatians 2:11-14

[11] When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong. [12] Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. [13] The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray. [14] When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?”

Such a reporting and reproving of sin protects the gospel. “Leaving SGM (if the congregation affirms the direction) is criticism enough.” No it isn’t! It is that kind of thinking that has allowed C.J.’s sins to grow and flourish on your watch. Great reproach has come upon SGM and the gospel because you have been unwilling to deal with C.J. over the years in a biblical manner. It is not silence that serves the gospel. It is silence that destroys the witness of the gospel and the credibility of the church. In part, I believe God raised up SGM Survivors (2007) and SGM Refuge (2008) because of your disobedience.

Josh, you said “We don’t think these internal reasons need to be broadcast on the blogs for the whole world to read.” Not true. The whole world would do well to read the “internal reasons.” Then the world would understand how serious the issues are in SGM instead of being deceived by the constant spin put out by C.J., John and the Board of Directors.

Furthermore, the Christian world and secular world would know that CLC pastors are not intimidated by the SGM leaders when they threatened to falsely accuse you of gossip, slander and divisiveness. You must stop caring about their condemnations. Their manipulation must be stopped and exposed. Your silence is a capitulation to their coercion.

Brothers, you know C.J. has continued in his sin and you know the men around him have imitated his example. Why do you protect them when you are commanded to expose them? None of these men have taken warning because none of them have been rebuked by you or others. How can you say C.J. is above reproach and blameless and yet you are leaving SGM over his (and other’s) abusive leadership and unethical conduct?

Let me add an important point. It is insufficient to tell CLC you are recommending separation over disappointments and disagreements of a morally neutral nature (i.e. differences with how past how past issues were dealt with, differences in handling disagreement; differences in leadership methods, decision making and what to communicate, and differences in polity).

The church must be told about the sin that produced the disappointments and disagreements (i.e., pride, hypocrisy, slander, partiality, favoritism, deceit, lying, lording, cover up, spin, heavy handedness, etc.). You owe God’s people biblical explanations, not generalizations that sound like simple disagreements arising from different perspectives rather than from sinful actions and practices.

For example, C.J. secretly recruiting members in Covenant Life Church to start a rival church in Germantown, MD if Covenant Life leaves SGM is an ethical issue. I reported on these plans last Spring when Mickey Connolly was telling other pastors about SGM’s commitment plant churches in any city where a church dared to leave SGM (if they had the resources). He did this with the knowledge and support of the Board of Directors.

Brothers, we honor Jesus when we follow his Word, not when we break it.

“My [Joshua’s] desire in all this is to honor Jesus. So I ask, ‘Is the gospel served by the whole world hearing about the details of our concerns for SGM?’ I don’t think so.”

The sins of C.J. and SGM are not trivial and they have not ceased. They are serious and that is why you are leaving the movement. In answer to your question, the gospel is most definitely not served by silence. It is the lack of prophetic utterance that has allowed C.J. to continue down the road of ruin.

The whole world needs to know the collaborating evidence of CLC. The SGM churches need to know your experience with C.J. is like my experience with C.J. which is like the experience of countless others.

Please follow the advice of Wayne Grudem and stop enabling C.J. He needs your loving rebuke and redemptive discipline. It is still not too late to obey Scripture.

“Paul’s command to rebuke a sinning elder publicly means that some statement of the nature of the offense must be made to the church (“rebuke them in the presence of all,” [1 Tim 5:20]…. Such a public disclosure of the sin of a leader will signal to the congregation that the leaders of the church will not hide such matters from them in the future. This will increase the confidence of the church in the integrity of the leadership board. It will also allow the sinning leader to begin the gradual process of rebuilding relationships and trust with the congregation, because he will not have to deal with people who have a hundred different speculations about what his sin was, but with people who know the specific sin, and can see the genuine repentance and change regarding that area of sin in his life.” (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology, p. 899)

“When churches have to discipline a church leader, an easy mistake to make is failing to take Paul’s command seriously [to rebuke him before the church], thereby failing to give adequate disclosure to the church of the nature of the sin involved. If that happens, the congregation only hears that a leader was removed from office because of some sin (or maybe a general category of sin is mentioned). But this is not really an effective public rebuke. Because it is so vague, it will only result in confusion, speculation, and gossip. Moreover, serious divisions can arise in the church because in the absence of information some people will think the discipline process too harsh and others will think it too lenient, and the church will not be united in supporting the process.” (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology, footnote 20, p. 899)

More than any other church, it is your responsibility to reprove C.J. (and the Board) “in the presence of all.” Why do you cover up for them and leave them off the hook for grave patterns of sin?

I am also appealing to you in private to lift your sanctions on Covenant Life Church. You have no authority to impose these kinds of restrictions on the members. No one need obey you when you require silence. If they do, they only contribute to the problem and follow your poor example. I hope you will post the audio of the Member’s Meeting immediately. Lastly, please provide me a fuller explanation for your actions and as always I welcome any refutation of my position you care to give.

For the good of the gospel and the greater glory of God,

Brent
Post Script

Jesse’s letter is a great point of reference for you because it was open and honest. He shared those reasons with friends and pastors. I did not receive his letter from a SGM pastor. Nor was there any indication it was confidential.

SGM-Mahaneygate (World Mag, 2 Nov 12): Megastar's "Troubled Ministry"

Troubles continue to mount for Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM), an evangelical association with about 90 churches and 28,000 members worldwide. The SGM board of directors reinstated the ministry’s founder, C.J. Mahaney, as president of SGM in early 2012 after he took a leave of absence for several months.

Accusations of spiritual pride and hypocrisy precipitated Mahaney’s leave. Now SGM is facing a lawsuit by three female plaintiffs, alleging that SGM leaders covered up sexual abuse that occurred in the 1980s and 1990s, and that they discouraged church members from cooperating with law enforcement officials.

Even before the lawsuit, several SGM churches, including ones in Charlottesville, Va., Sarasota, Fla., and Daytona Beach, Fla., had left the association. Jesse Jarvis, pastor of the Daytona Beach congregation, cited a “leadership culture characterized by excessive authority and insufficient accountability” as a reason for leaving SGM.

Mahaney founded SGM in 1982 out of Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Md. In 2004, Mahaney stepped down as Covenant Life pastor. Following his reappointment as the president of SGM, Mahaney relocated the ministry’s headquarters to Louisville, Ky., and planted a church there. The new church held its opening service on Sept. 30.

The lawsuit charges SGM leaders with allowing suspected child abusers to continue interacting with children, sheltering the accused perpetrators from prosecution, and forcing alleged victims as young as 3 to forgive their molesters. The complaint accuses several SGM elders and officials of actively covering up the crimes, while it names Mahaney because the offenses allegedly occurred under his leadership.

SGM released a statement saying that “child abuse in any context is reprehensible and criminal. Sovereign Grace Ministries takes seriously the biblical commands to pursue the protection and well being of all people, especially the most vulnerable in its midst, little children.”

SGM-Mahaneygate (Detwiler): Flagship Church Leaving SGM

C. J. Mahaney, Founder and President of Sovereign Grace Ministries
Co-defendant in Child Sex Abuse Case of Coverup

http://www.brentdetwiler.com/brentdetwilercom/2012/11/5/flagship-church-of-sovereign-grace-ministries-announces-plan.html

Flagship Church of Sovereign Grace Ministries Announces Plans to Leave
No church has loved C.J. and Sovereign Grace Ministries more than Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, MD. From its inception in 1977, CLC has served as the model church for all the churches in SGM. The members of CLC have worked harder and given more to serve the interests of C.J. and SGM than any other church. What the Jerusalem, Antioch, and Ephesian churches were in NT times; Gaithersburg has been throughout the 30 year history of SGM.

Starting in 2002, the headquarters for SGM was housed in the newly expanded CLC facility. So too the Pastors College. In addition, conference after conference was held in their building. The members of CLC have always sacrificed their time, used their talents, and given their money to make Sovereign Grace Ministries a success for the glory of God. CLC has a church population of approximately 5,000 persons.

Joshua Harris moved to CLC in 1997 in order to be trained by C.J. He lived with the Mahaney’s up until he was married. After 8 years of discipleship, C.J. turned the church over to Joshua and installed him as the sr. pastor. In 2007, C.J. added Joshua to the SGM Board of Directors. He planned to turn the ministry over to Joshua next year when he turns 60. Joshua was C.J.’s chosen replacement.

All that has changed. In July 2011, C.J. abruptly left Covenant Life Church without talking to any of his pastors about his decision. In April 2012, he abruptly decided to relocate the SGM headquarters to Louisville, KY without talking to any of the pastors. In September 2012, he started a new church even though he was unreconciled to his old church and the pastors. Tens of thousands of people have watched C.J. destroy the ministry we began in 1982. Friends and supporters throughout nation and many parts of the world have been shocked as they’ve observed C.J.’s pride, deceit and hypocrisy over the past year and a half.

After being ever so patient and forbearing with C.J., Joshua recommended last night that Covenant Life Church end their partnership with Sovereign Grace Ministries. All 18 pastors were in complete agreement with Josh. This is in stark contrast to July 2011 when Dave Harvey, the Interim President of SGM at the time, said the following when Josh stepped down from the Board of Directors.

“The important thing is that Josh and the [SGM] board continue to affirm our ministry partnership together. Josh’s resignation from the board is not a grand statement about our future together. It’s not even an indication that we disagree on most things. We don’t. In fact Josh and the board agree on about 98% of things, especially on our shared mission we have been given to see churches planted and built in this country and around the world.” (Dave Harvey, “Where we differ, where we agree,” July 14, 2011)

Only someone who has been a part of Sovereign Grace for a long time can fully appreciate the magnitude of this action by the CLC pastors. These 18 men were all loyal and devoted friends and followers of C.J. Their lives and ministries were largely built around C.J. and his leadership. None of them ever imagined having to leave SGM because they no longer trusted C.J. or the Board of Directors given their abusive leadership practices and unethical conduct. Many other churches in SGM feel the same way. A few have left. Many more will follow.

Last night, Joshua provided detailed explanations to the church for why the separation from SGM was necessary. He covered seven different areas. It must have been the hardest and easiest thing Joshua has ever done. Hardest, because of his deep love for C.J. Easiest, because the reasons were compelling and the choice obvious. It was time to leave.

The pastors have taken this action now because they don’t need to wait for a final SG Book of Church Order. They have set this direction primarily because the moral problems in SGM are flagrant and C.J. remains unrepentant. Over the past 18 months, they have experienced up close and personal, the same C.J. described in my documents. They’ve also experienced the trickery of Dave Harvey, the heavy handedness of Mickey Connolly, and the partiality of John Loftness. Churches in SGM are going to leave in large numbers for two reasons. Unethical conduct and unbiblical polity.

Per the CLC constitution, the entire church must vote on this recommendation. That’s why the pastors announced a direction, not a decision, to separate from SGM. They will hold two “Coffee and Conversation” meetings on November 11 and 18 to answer questions. Two weeks later, an online vote will be taken over a three week period. Then the votes will be tallied. A 51% majority is needed in order to sever ties with SGM. The pastors hope to wrap things up by mid-December.
From my perspective, C.J. began to build a “Tower of Babel” around 1996. The Sovereign Grace tower reached to the heavens by 2010. But now in 2012, the Lord has come down and begun to scattered it over the earth.

Genesis 11:4, 8

[4] Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”… [8] So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Making a name for one’s self always invites God’s judgment. It is this love of reputation and desire for greatness that has brought about the downfall of C.J. and Sovereign Grace Ministries. The well-known proverb is true.

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

But here’s the good news. Unlike the King’s men with Humpty Dumpty, the Holy Spirit can put contrite men back together again. In his mercy, the Lord gathers after he scatters. It continues to be my prayer that God will raise up and strengthen pastors and churches characterized by humility, honesty and courage.

SGM-Mahaneygate: 4 More Churches Leave Sovereign Grace Ministries in Last 10 Days

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 7:13PM

Sovereign Grace Church of Daytona Beach left Sovereign Grace Ministries on October 12 citing a loss of trust and a leadership culture characterized by excessive authority and insufficient accountability. Four more churches have severed their ties in the last 10 days.

I don’t gloat over these departures. That is not why I bring them to your attention. I bring them to your attention because the SGM Leadership Team and Board of Directors will never tell you about departures, let alone provide the reasons pastors are giving for severing their ties. These men have not left over polity differences – we won’t know until Sunday what form of polity SGM has a adopted. These men have primarily left over ethical concerns. Here is the latest tally.

July

1. Keith Breault, Redeemer Church of Charlottesville, Charlottesville, VA

August

2. Luan Nguyen, Grace Community Church, Sarasota, FL

October

3. Jesse Jarvis, Sovereign Grace Church of Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach, FL

4. Jerry Cisar, Gulf Coast Community Church, St. Petersburg, FL

5. Eric Simmons, Redeemer Church of Arlington, Arlington, VA

6. Toby Kurth, Christ Church at Park Presidio, San Francisco, CA

7. Sam Shin, Wellspring Church, Pleasanton, CA

C.J., Dave Harvey, John Loftness, Phil Sasser and the Board want everyone to believe all is well in the world of Sovereign Grace Ministries. From the beginning, the Interim Board called my 600 pages of carefully documented evidence a “tall tale,” “gossip” and “slander.” They ordered people not to read any of my documents. C.J. took great offense when Joshua Harris permitted people to examine their contents. Two thousand pages later, SGM continues to tell people not to read my documents or blog posts.

Men like Mickey Connolly, a current SGM Board of Director, demanded that members of CrossWay Community Church leave the church if they refused to obey him by reading anything I wrote. See Ten Common Cult-Like Characteristics Evident in Mickey Connolly’s Leadership. SGM will do almost anything to keep people from knowing the truth - lie, deceive, threatened, cover-up and withhold vital information. But the Lord in his sovereignty has seen fit to override their cunning and get out the truth.

I have no proof but I surmise SGM has hired a public relations firm to help rescue their deteriorating image. If so, I don’t think their strategy is working. For instance, two days ago they highlighted C.J. on The Sovereign Grace Pastors Conference Slideshow just after he was cited as a defendant in a class action lawsuit for covering up the sexual molestation of children. He appeared in 15 slides. Far more than anyone else. Bob Kauflin came in second at 5. Dave Harvey came in third at 4.

Just tonight SGM had Christian Wegert honor C.J. on the website for his messages at Eckstein Conference in Germany on “how cravings underlie conflict” and “the responsibility we have to help each another grow in godliness.” C.J. has not lived these messages. He is a complete hypocrite for preaching on these topics. No matter, the Board of Directors continues to build the entire ministry upon and around C.J.

What happens if a jury finds C.J. guilty of doing “absolutely nothing” in protecting children from sexual predation? Charge 18 in the recent class action lawsuit says, “The Church [referring to Sovereign Grace Ministries] learned in 1997 through non-ministerial means that the son of a high-ranking Church [SGM] leader was engaged in the sexual predation of children under the Church’s care. Yet the Church [SGM] did absolutely nothing to protect the children.” C.J. was the President of SGM and Chairman of the Board in 1997. He never told me about any “sexual predation of children.” If he is found guilty, Sovereign Grace could be sued for millions of dollars and he must be removed from ministry.

The SGM website has also been repetitiously featuring individuals like Christian Wegert. This began in earnest with the August 1 post, “Tim Kerr: If prayer is such a good thing, why does it seem so hard?” Since then approximately 40 men have been paraded by name before readers giving the impression that there is vast support for the ministry. Anyone who is astute immediately takes note of all the prominent leaders who are no longer featured because C.J. has cut them off for differing with him.

One person you haven’t heard from in a long time is Dave Harvey. He’s vanished into thin air. I hope he hasn’t suffered the fate of Jimmy Hoffa. We’ve heard nothing from Dave or about Dave for over seven months. That will probably change with this post. Expect a feature on the SGM website tomorrow. Anyway, the last time we heard from Dave was on March 19 when he introduced the Interim Board. See Introducing Our New Board.

I wrote Dave three months later about his falling out with C.J. which occurred earlier in the year. Since that conflict he has not been featured on the website. He didn’t even participate in the Eckstein 2012 conference last week in Germany. That is hard to comprehend since Dave has been Sovereign Grace’s point man in Germany for many years.

Subject: Falling Out with C.J.
Importance: High

Hello Dave,

I’ve been told about the break down in your relationship with C.J. because he feels you did not defend him adequately and did not denounce me, Larry T, etc. more harshly. This comes as no surprise. You need to bring this to the immediate attention of the entire Board to whom you and C.J. are now accountable. Be honest with them. Don’t cover up for C.J. Put an end to the enablement. You must tell the Board about this mistreatment of you. Dave, you know full well that nothing has changed with C.J. Your assessment and my assessment from 2004 are as relevant today.

“To correct CJ, or to challenge his own self-perception, was to experience a reaction through e-mails, consistent disagreement (without seeking to sufficiently understand), a lack of sufficient follow-up and occasionally, relational withdrawal. Along with this, CJ was poor in volunteering areas of sin, temptation or weakness in himself.” (Dave Harvey, Nov 11, 2004)

“[C.J.] can become resentful, distrustful or withdraw when he feels misunderstood, judged, or sinned against by others. Can judge or prematurely come to conclusions about others based on limited or incomplete information. When correcting or disagreeing can communicate his assessment or perspective too strongly or categorically. Can lack gentleness and not perceive the unhelpful effect of his words, actions or decisions upon an individual. Can be difficult to correct and help because he often disagrees with or has a different perspective on illustrations. Infrequently makes us aware of specific sins or the correction others are bringing to him.” (Brent Detwiler, April, 2004)

I have little hope you and C.J. will be transparent with the Board. I imagine this will be glossed over and made to sound like a trifle when it is serious. Please turn the corner on a new lease in life by doing what is right.

Regards,

Brent

Dave will be speaking at the SGM Pastors Conference next week. I assume he will be lauded by C.J. and Dave will return the honors. But that is not the truth. If Dave ever tells the truth about C.J. it is the end of his ministerial career. He can forget being on Baords, selling books, speaking at Conferences, and the like. It's over for Dave if he gets honest. Dave knows the same C.J. I know. He just chose to cover up for him.

You never know what is going on in SGM unless you have a prophetic gift, personal relationships, insider contacts, or leaked information. Take for instance, Ken Sande and David Powlison. These men fell off the face of the earth too. This is what C.J. said about these men 15 months ago.

Just so you’ll know, I have also contacted David Powlison and Mark Dever and asked them to review the charges and provide me with their counsel and correction. I have enlisted them to serve me personally during this time and to ensure this process of examining my heart and life is as thorough as possible. And for the past year I have been the recipient of Ken Sande’s correction, counsel and care. That, I am grateful to say, will continue…. I am deeply moved as I reflect on how rich I am relationally and I am humbled by the time these men are willing to spend serving me and Sovereign Grace.

David and Ken provided C.J. counsel and correction. C.J. never told us what David and Ken had to say. He never reports on correction he does not like. He covers it up. Then he cuts off his relationship with those who confront him and you never hear from them again. There have been no references to these men or their ministries in over 15 months. The Christian Counseling and Education Foundation (CCEF) and Peacemakers used to be household names. These two men have no continuing role in C.J.’s life because they had the nerve to correct C.J. on his deceit and pride.

The same is true of Sovereign Grace churches that silently disappear into the night never to be heard from again. Charlottesville, Sarasota, Daytona Beach, St. Petersburg, Arlington, San Francisco, and Pleasanton – all gone with no explanation from SGM.

The only hope for SGM is keeping people in the dark and providing them misinformation. That has been their plan from the beginning. Only problem…the God of light is committed to expose deeds of darkness. More and more keeps coming out and more and more chruches leave with each passing week.

Ephesians 5:8-11

[8] For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light [9] (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) [10] and find out what pleases the Lord. [11] Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

(Detwiler) SGM-Mahaneygate: CJ Mahaney, Sex Abuse Lawsuit, Jerry Sandusky, Penn State, Romanism

C. J. Mahaney, one of several co-defendants in class action lawsuit alleging coverup in child sexual abuse

http://www.brentdetwiler.com/brentdetwilercom/2012/10/22/sexual-abuse-and-spousal-abuse-in-sovereign-grace-ministries.html

Sexual Abuse and Spousal Abuse in Sovereign Grace Ministries
Last Wednesday, Associated Press reporter Eric Tucker broke the story. His article, “Lawsuit claims evangelical church group concealed sex abuse allegations in Md., Va.” appeared in The Washington Post and was immediately picked up by media outlets everywhere. The story went viral on the internet and became national news overnight.

The next day, Greta Kreuz interviewed Joshua Harris. Ms. Kreuz is a television reporter for WJLA-TV, channel 7 which is the ABC affiliated television station in Washington, D.C. and the flagship station of the Allbritton Communications Company.

See http://www.wjla.com/video/2012/10/church-sex-scandal.html for the video. Here is an excerpt from the broadcast.

[Kreuz] “Joshua Harris…says the church has never tried to cover up abuse.” [Harris] “There has never been a policy like that. We are very committed to involving the authorities. Our biggest concern is not our reputation or what anyone thinks of us, it is caring for kids well.” [Kreuz]

“But those now suing don’t buy it.”

Joshua has put himself in the middle of the lawsuit. He will have to defend his denials on three counts. One, the pastors have never covered up sexual abuse. Two, the pastors have a proven record of involving the police. Three, concern for their own reputation as pastors has never been put ahead of their concern for sexual molested children. That is a tall order to defend against since four of eight defendants were pastors from Covenant Life Church. If these pastors are found guilty, Joshua is found guilty of defending the guilty.

The most frequently cited defendant in the lawsuit is John Loftness. He is in the greatest legal jeopardy according the charges listed. John was a pastor at Covenant Life Church until September 2007. At that time, he became senior pastor of Solid Rock Church in Riverdale, MD. Six months ago, John was appointed Chairman of the Board for Sovereign Grace Ministries.

Legally and spiritually, John is the most powerful man in all of Sovereign Grace Ministries. He is “the spiritual leader” of the entire movement. He has also covered up for C.J. more than anyone other leader in SGM since his installation. Now he is being charged with covering up sexual molestation. This description of his powers as Chairman comes directly from the SGM Bylaws.

“Section 6.3 The Chairman. The Chairman shall be a member of the Board of Directors. As the spiritual leader of the Corporation, the Chairman shall have principal responsibility to establish the Corporation’s vision, mission, and priorities. He shall preside at meetings of the Board of Directors. He shall make reports to the Board of Directors, and shall have such other rights, duties, and powers as are authorized by the Board of Directors from time to time.”

Gary Ricucci is the second most cited defendant in the lawsuit. John and Gary stand out as you read the charges. Gary pastors the men and their families attending the Sovereign Grace Pastors College. He is also a pastor in C.J.’s church – Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville. Like John, he has been a staunch defender of C.J.

And of course, C.J. is cited in the lawsuit. I am not personally familiar with the facts presented by the three plaintiffs except to say that C.J. never informed me of the sexual abuse occurring in Covenant Life Church or Sovereign Grace Church of Fairfax. That information should have been made known to me as a Board of Director. I would have recommended prosecution of the child molesters. For whatever reasons, C.J. concealed that information from me. That much I do know for a certainty.
In addition to specific charges against specific individuals, charge number 18 is against an unidentified individual.

“18. As early as 1987, the Church was on notice that sexual predation of children was occurring under its auspices. In addition to the incidents described below, the Church learned in 1997 through non-ministerial means that the son of a high-ranking Church leader was engaged in the sexual predation of children under the Church’s care. Yet the Church did absolutely nothing to protect the children.”

The prosecuting attorneys don’t tell us who this “high-ranking Church [SGM] leader” is or the name of his son. I don’t know of any high ranking leader’s son who preyed upon children. C.J. must know and he will be forced to tell the court.

Last Thursday, Susan Burke, a co-counsel in the case, was interviewed on the Janet Mefferd Show. Here is the link.

http://media.townhallstore.com/jm/rs/jm_rs_20121018-1_Thu_d6f56cac-2580-4501-900f-537c5ea6e5be_radio-show_Hi.mp3

On the show, Ms. Burke made reference to “many other victims as well.” All of this information will come out during discovery. Only eight defendants are cited in the lawsuit but it appears additional pastors will be depositioned in order to prove a wide spread pattern of wrong doing. According to Ms. Burke, the three plaintiffs are only the tip of the iceberg.

“The families have kind of stepped forward and are willing to serve as representative plaintiffs. I’ve heard from, and been in touch with, many other victims as well. So we decided this would be, because of the subject matter and how traumatic it is for people to come forward. We thought the most protective device here would be a class action and even since we just filed we’ve had a few more folks reach out to us as well. So sadly, it is not just the three.” (Susan Burke)

I can vouch for this myself. Since last Wednesday when the story broke, I’ve been contacted by women whose children were sexually abused or they were physically abused by their husbands. They don’t know who to turn to for help. In their cases, the pastors did nothing to prosecute the abusers.

These women experienced the same kind treatment by their pastors as alleged in the lawsuit
I fear there are many cases of spousal abuse in Sovereign Grace Churches that have been terribly mishandled by SGM pastors. This too must be investigated. I want to encourage any woman who has been battered to get help. If your pastor did more to protect your abuser than you, or counseled you against contacting the police, or confronted you for being unforgiving, or told you not to separate, then please speak up. Such abusive pastoring must stop. I am glad to help you, confront your pastors for you, and put you in touch with people who can uphold you.

Susan Burke went on to reference the cover up of sexual molestation at Penn State University motivated by concerns for its reputation and revenues. She cites the Louis Freeh report. I suspect Ms. Burke will adopt his investigative approach in his successful prosecuting of the university and its key leaders.

“And I think what we’ve seen sadly in like the Penn State and in the Catholic Church; I mean what you see is that institutions end up elevating their own reputational and financial interest over vulnerable children. I don’t know whether or not you had a chance to look at the wonderful investigative report done by Louis Freeh on the Penn State thing, but the way he phrased it there, you know [there was] absolutely no empathy for the child victims.” (Susan Burke)

I wrote a blog post in July comparing Sovereign Grace Ministries to Penn State University. At the time, I charged SGM leaders with concealing spiritual abuse. I will not be surprised if they are also found guilty of concealing sexual and spousal abuse.

Joshua Harris claims Sovereign Grace Ministries is devoid of debased motivations like those behind the Penn State University scandal. I have to challenge that contention. I think Joshua has failed to apply the doctrine of sin. Every church is tempted to cover up sexual molestation because no church wants to be cited by the Press for negligence. There are serious consequences for one’s reputation and income if word gets out that sexual abuse is occurring due to lax policies, or lax enforcement of policies, or negligent pastors who do not prosecute abusers and identify them for the church. Every church should have a register of child molesters on their website. The well-being of children is far more important than protecting the reputation of abusers who return to their crimes at a high rate.

Even in churches!

Here is that post.

Sovereign Grace Leaders Conceal Spiritual Abuse Like Penn State Leaders Concealed Sexual Abuse

Brent Detwiler

“In clear, calm, concise and unrelenting words, a report from an independent investigation into Penn State’s handling of the Jerry Sandusky sexual molestation case assigned blame in harsh terms to a wide-ranging group of high-ranking officials.

“From iconic football coach Joe Paterno, to now fired president Graham Spanier, to a detached Board of Trustees, the failures, lack of concern and ceding [giving up] of oversight, no one escaped blame in failing to stop Sandusky’s 15-year plus reign of terror in central Pennsylvania.”[1]

##

“Former FBI director Louis Freeh said Thursday that the most “telling” piece of information in his nearly eight-month investigation into the university’s handling of Sandusky’s misconduct is a 2000 incident in which a Penn State janitor witnessed the once-revered coach performing oral sex on a young boy in a university locker-room shower.

“The janitor who observed it says it’s the worst thing he ever saw,” Freeh said, outlining the explosive findings of his 267-page review, which found a complete failure of the university leadership to stop Sandusky. “He’s [the janitor] a Korean War veteran. … He spoke to the other janitors. They were awed and shocked by it. But, what did they do? They said they can’t report this because they’d be fired. They were afraid to take on the football program. They said the university would circle around it. It was like going against the president of United States. If that’s the culture on the bottom, God help the culture at the top.”[2]

##

Just like the insularly environment at Penn State University, the same sinful dynamics have been at work in SGM since 2004. Leaders around C.J. and people under C.J. haven’t reported spiritual abuse[3] or taken a stand “because they’d be fired.” Men like Harvey, Shank, Kauflin, Harris, Maresco, and Layman were “afraid to take on” C.J. Instead they “circled around” him. Going up against C.J. was “like going up against the President.” It still is and will continue so long as root issues go unaddressed and unconfessed.

I’d encourage each reader to look over “The Report of the Special Investigative Counsel Regarding the Actions of The Pennsylvania State University Related to the Child Abuse Committed by Gerald A. Sandusky.” Here is the link.

http://l.yimg.com/dh/ap/default/120712/freeh_report_final_071212.pdf

This is the kind of investigation and report, Ted Kober and Ed Keinath of Ambassadors of Reconciliation, should have done and produced for Sovereign Grace Ministries. Unlike former FBI Director, Louis Freeh, they refused to ” blame in harsh terms a wide-ranging group of high-ranking officials.”

“Over and over, Freeh’s damning report referred to a pervasive and damaging culture at Penn State where the levers of power were tightly controlled by four men — university President Graham Spanier, head football coach Joe Paterno, Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz — whose repeated failure to deal with troubling allegations lodged against Sandusky always seemed to be directed by one goal: ‘to avoid the consequences of bad publicity.’”[4]

“The Freeh Group believes the interest of avoiding bad publicity allowed Sandusky to remain free, where he would go on to abuse additional boys and maintain near full access to Penn State facilities and the inner workings of the football program.”[5]

“It is more reasonable to conclude that, in order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the most powerful leaders at Penn State University – Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley – repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse from the authorities, the Board of Trustees, Penn State community, and the public at large. Although concern to treat the child abuser humanely [Sandusky] was expressly stated, no such sentiments were ever expressed by them for Sandusky’s victims.” (The Report of the Special Investigative Counsel Regarding the Actions of The Pennsylvania State University Related to the Child Abuse Committed by Gerald A. Sandusky)
The same is true with “the most powerful leaders” at SGM. There has been a “repeated failure to deal with troubling allegations lodged against” C.J. Instead, Harvey, Shank, Harris, and Loftness focused on making sure C.J. was treated “humanely” while they expressed “no such sentiments” for those who were treated inhumanely. There will be restitution by Penn State University for the eight victims of sexual abuse who testified before the Grand Jury. There will be jail sentences for Sandusky, Spanier and Schultz. There will never be restitution by SGM to its victims and there will never be discipline for Mahaney, Harvey or Shank. That’s one reason I considered using a civil court in which to press my charges.

“During her time as the vice president for student affairs at Penn State from 2003-07, Vicky Triponey says she witnessed the power that Paterno wielded over the administration. Which is why nothing in the Freeh report about how the scandal was handled surprised her, she told USA TODAY on Thursday. Triponey says the reluctance of the school to act on Sandusky was more than just the fear of bad publicity, as Freeh suggested. ‘I think it’s about the image, the whole package of what Penn State football and Penn State became,’ said Triponey, now the interim vice president for student affairs at the College of New Jersey. ‘Penn State became … too big to fail. It wasn’t just that we can’t have bad press. It was, we have to protect this image that we’re perfect.’”[6]

The exact same thing is true about C.J. Scores of people have “witnessed the power” he “wielded over the administration.” For the past twelve years, C.J. has taken over or shut down numerous processes designed to address him. When that was not possible he had other people like Shank, Kauflin, Harvey, Loftness or Connolly do it for him.

The day after I released my documents on July 6, 2011, Harvey, Purswell, Cabaniss, Connolly, Gamache, Greasley, Loftness, Osborne, Prater, and Shank were installed on the interim Board. They were preoccupied with protecting C.J.’s and SGM’s image and immediately declared him fit for ministry and me guilty of slander. The mission “to protect this image that we’re perfect” informed their every decision.

That’s why justice was never served. That’s why all the deceit, lying, cover-up and cunning. That’s why the refusal to let me present my charges at an adjudication hearing. That’s why the plan to substitute a corrupt three panel review that was tightly controlled. That’s why a 400k report by AoR that didn’t deal with any of my evidence or charges. The love of reputation – wanting to protect the SGM image – corrupted good men. The praise of men became more important than the commendation of God.

Instead of Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley; we have Harvey, Loftness, Kober and Keinath. The Freeh report summates, “In short, nothing was done and Sandusky was allowed to continue with impunity.” The same is true with C.J. and many other leaders in SGM.

It is sickening that a group of secular lawyers has more discernment into the human heart without the Bible, than Christian pastors and Christian conciliators do with the Bible. Louis Freeh went to motive because motive drives men’s hearts. That’s where the evidence led him and that’s what he majored on in his report. SGM and AoR avoid some matters and condemns anyone who judges the “thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Even a novice detective knows you look for means, motive and opportunity when investigating a crime.

But Kober, Harris, and Loftness tell us we must not judge motives but that is not what the Bible teaches! It tell us not to judge hypocritically (log and speck), self-righteously (look to yourself), or unjustly (without evidence). This “judge not” theology is tantamount to telling Christians to throw away all objective standards, discernment, logic, and critical thinking ability. It is a recipe for disaster and a main reason false teachers, false prophets, and cults thrive in the United States (Matt 7:15-20).
Paul the apostle tells us “the spiritual person judges [discerns, evaluates, assesses, critiques] all things” (1 Cor 2:15). He continues, “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. ‘Purge the evil person from among you.’” (1 Cor 5:12-13) We are called to judge (i.e., assess and justly punish) evil doers in the church. What C.J. and other SGM leaders have done is evil.

Scripture teaches we can know a man’s heart and often know what is motivating him by observing his words and deeds (cf. Matt 3:7-19; 5:1-7:28; 15:16-20; Gal 5:19-20; 2 Tim 3:1-9; Heb 4:12; James 2:14-26) or by supernatural knowledge (1 Cor 14:24-25). This kind of judging is sanctioned, not prohibited, in Scripture.

Graham Spanier (president) and Tim Curley (athletic director) were both charged with perjury (lying to the grand jury) and failure to report a crime. They await trial this fall. No such trial awaits Dave Harvey, Steve Shank or the interim Board. No one has been held accountable for hundreds of lies starting with C.J.

“Over and over, Freeh’s damning report referred to a pervasive and damaging culture at Penn State where the levers of power were tightly controlled by four men” who were willing to lie and cover-up sexual abuse in order “to avoid the consequences of bad publicity” and “protect this image that we’re perfect.”

That is precisely what has been going on in Sovereign Grace Ministries and it is reprehensible that no one in SGM or Ambassadors of Reconciliation has been willing to stand up and say so! Sexual abuse and perjury are being judge in State College, PA. Spiritual abuse and lying are being covered-up and passively condoned in Sovereign Grace Ministries.

[3] “In the past, we have been easily satisfied with any response from C.J. But this time we must make certain it is the real deal. For instance, he must see issues like spiritual abuse. He will need your help. For example, when someone brings correction and we say you are proud or bitter without giving them the freedom to speak and don’t listen sincerely and humbly, we are abusing them. When people say they been adversely affected by our sins against them and we correct them for self-pity or tell them they are acting like victims, we abuse them. Or when we withdrawal our affection, project guilt, rally others against a person, distance ourselves, play the trust card, we abuse them. C.J. tends to react to labels like “lording” or “spiritual abuse” but they fit him. He just doesn’t connect the dots to see how they apply in his dealing with people. Similarly, lording it over others. That is, using other people to accomplish your own selfish agenda be it self-preservation or retaliation in many forms (mild to flagrant) towards people you don’t like.” (Brent Detwiler to Joshua Harris, “True Repentance,” Monday, June 27, 2011 4:00 PM)
