Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. Anglicans Unscripted 79: Anglican Drunks, Alcoholics, & Rhubarbs

Booze News from Canterbury:  "Cheer up, lads,
have another glass of port!"

Anglican Unscripted is the only video newscast in the Anglican Church. Every Week Kevin, George, Allan and Peter bring you news and prospective from around the globe.

STORY INDEX:
Drunken or Poisoned?
00:00
How Via Media Works 10:34
Peter Ould 16:38
Egypt 26:18

This is funny, in one sense alone, listening to these two Chaps discuss "Anglican drunks and alcoholics who've fallen off the cliff." (Their words on the URL.) Theologically, what is one to think? "Drunken sailors who've fallen into a ditch..." The metaphor, offered by Mr. (Canterbury) Welby last week, is rich...deliciously rich. The metaphor should be explored, expanded, and vigorously applied. Or, how about a ship going down at sea? "Time for false teachers to be called out..." says one speaker. With what? What theology? What do you believe? The REAL TRAGEDY is the impact on the pew. Who the heck cares about the collars and leaders? It's about the pew. As I listened to this, while rather funny, the absence of substantive theology...by the participants...was sad.  Perhaps they have some, but we didn't hear much, if anything at all. Can we say "empty?"

Whaddya gonna do?

Mr. (ABP) Glenn Davies of Australia offers some hope--a man with a solid theology.

GAFCON to Crown Commissioners: Concerning Archbishop of Canterbury

RE: Appointment of a new Archbishop of Canterbury

FROM: The Global South of the Anglican Communion Secretariat:
37 St Paul Road, Vacoas, Mauritius
http://www.globalsouthanglican.org/

TO: The Rt Hon the Lord Luce KG, GCVO Chairman,
Crown Nominations Commission
20 July 2012
The Global South of the Anglican Communion, comprising more than fifty-five million of the eighty million members of the Anglican Communion, deeply appreciate our historical relation with the See of Canterbury. We therefore commend the following to the Crown Nominations Commission for your serious consideration.

It is the reality of the Anglican Communion in the 21st Century that the majority of Anglicans are found within the Global South, especially in Africa. Resulting from the faithful witness of Western missionaries over the past two hundred years, Anglicans today stand in worship and witness amidst diverse cultures, among ancient traditions and often in inter-religious tensions.

As noted in the media release of the Church of England on the appointment of the Archbishop of Canterbury, one of his responsibilities is to be "the Focus of Unity of the Anglican Communion... primus inter pares among the bishops." This role calls for the new Archbishop of Canterbury to always act in a conciliar and collegial manner with his fellow Primates because his decisions will affect the life and witness of Provinces worldwide.

The new Archbishop of Canterbury should have the experience and cross-cultural sensitivity to understand the concerns and conflicts in the worldwide Communion. Ho has to be able to communicate effectively with, and gain the respect and confidence of, his fellow Primates in the Global South. He has to be able, together with his fellow Primates, to more effectively restructure the Anglican Communion Office and the Anglican Consultative Council to better serve the Communion.

At a time when the Christian faith faces challenges from other religious as well as secular worldviews, the new Archbishop of Canterbury must be committed to uphold the orthodoxy of the Christian "faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints" (Jude 3), To fulfill his calling and vow as Guardian of Faith, he must have the capacity to collectively put into effect the decisions taken at Lambeth Conferences and Primates Meetings, especially on issues that have led to the present crisis in the Communion.

To secure the future and the unity of the Communion at a foundational level, the new Archbishop of Canterbury has to work with his fellow Primates to address the ecclesial deficit of the Anglican Communion highlighted in the report of the Windsor Continuation Group.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is also responsible to work with ecumenical partners for the unity of the "one holy catholic and apostolic Church". The new Archbishop of C4nterbury must be able to build upon the work of his predecessors while avoiding any further actions that may widen the gap between us and these partners.

In conclusion, the Global South Primates expect to be consulted on this decision of great importance for the Communion, and look forward eagerly to the new Archbishop of Canterbury to uplift God's people in the Anglican fold worldwide in obedience to God's Word.

We wholeheartedly pray and hope that the unity of our beloved Anglican Communion will be restored and strengthened.

Faithfully in Christ,

Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans: Inspired after London Meeting

Anglican defenders of true gospel inspired after London meeting
South Africans at the recent Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans conference in London, from the left L-R Bishop Bethlehem Nopece, Rev Dave Doveton, Rev Cierigh Samaai, Rev Gavin Mitchell, Rev Dominic Dube, Rev Lukas Katenda, Rev Nigel Juckes.

Anglican theologian and author, Dave Doveton was part of the South African delegation at a recent international conference in London attended by Anglican leaders from 30 nations who are united in defending the true gospel. He says delegates left the conference with a fresh, global vision for carrying out the Great Commission.

In 2008 the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) held in Jerusalem, established a Primates Council representing the majority of the world’s Anglicans and set up a global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (FCA) as a movement of bible believing Anglicans within the Communion. This was a response to the crisis caused by false teaching and the unbiblical actions of both the Episcopal Church in North America and the Canadian Anglican Church.
“After some 450 years it is becoming clear that what some have called the ‘Anglican experiment’ is not ending in failure, but is on the verge of a new and truly global future in which the original vision of the Reformers can be realized as never before” – Archbishop Eliud Wabukala.
The Primates Council called the London conference and it was held from Aril 23 to 27 at St Marks Church, Battersea Rise. It was attended by 200 invited delegates from 30 countries and 25 Anglican Provinces. We were a delegation of seven from Southern Africa: From Port Elizabeth –Bishop Bethlehem Nopece, Rev Dave Doveton and Rev Dominic Dube; from Durban — Rev Cierigh Samaai and Rev Nigel Juckes; from Stellenbosch — Father Gavin Mithchell; and from Namibia — Rev Lukas Katenda.
The theme of the conference “Jesus the Christ, Unique and Supreme” was brought home powerfully in the morning Bible studies from Colossians. The worship was joyful and uplifting. Seminars ranged over key topics such as evangelism, family, economic empowerment, the Gospel, church and spiritual leadership under pressure.
We heard reports from different parts of the world which put a face on the opposition and difficulties Anglican believers face as they try to engage in gospel witness. In Nigeria, Anglicans experience violent terrorism against leaders and churches; in many Islamic and Hindu contexts believers are persecuted and evangelism made very difficult. We heard how even in “Christian” England secular authorities harass faithful Christians. Many leaders spoke too of harassment by their own bishops for their gospel witness. While we were in the conference we received a report of a lay preacher from the very area we were meeting in who had been suspended for defending the traditional teaching on Christian Marriage.
There was the most amazing sense of unity and purpose in the conference that struck me personally, as we recognized and reaffirmed together the nature of the unchanging Gospel – the life transforming message of salvation from sin and all its consequences through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We were also encouraged to continue in our FCA goals which are – to proclaim and defend the gospel and to strengthen the church worldwide by supporting faithful Anglicans who have been excluded by those teaching a false gospel. We sensed that the Lord was working to revive and renew his church; were given hope that God still had a great purpose for our church by Archbishop Elihud Wabukala who in his chairman’s address to us said, “After some 450 years it is becoming clear that what some have called the ‘Anglican experiment’ is not ending in failure, but is on the verge of a new and truly global future in which the original vision of the Reformers can be realized as never before.”
In a plenary address, Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali (UK) spoke powerfully and movingly; he said the FCA is called to model an alternative way for the churches of the Anglican Communion to gather and relate to one another in such a way as to carry out the Great Commission in the coming decades.
As we met in seminars and network groups we were able to take practical steps to implement the commission that we felt the Holy Spirit was urging upon us. One major outcome of the conference is that international networks have been formed to facilitate our mission and to resist revisionist intrusions. Some of the networks formed are – Episcopal leaders, Pastors, Evangelists, Women in ministry, Theological Educators, Cross-cultural workers, Aid and Development workers, and Lawyers.
For me personally, I am blessed to be able to attend international conferences fairly often, but this particular one was the experience of a lifetime.

Archbishop Cranmer Attacked for Views on Homoerotic Unions and Traditional Marriage

One of our favorite bloggers is “Archbishop Cranmer,” a British blogger.  His Grace  writes with pizzazz, insight, humor and “Cranmerian judiciousness” on a host of political, cultural and religious issues.  The fictitious CANTAUR playfully plays the ventriloquist for our ancestral and influential Archbishop (murdered in the first degree during Queen Mary 1's times).  We highly recommend this blogsite.

Recently, the “Coalition for Marriage,” has been a British effort to garner signatories—a petition drive—in support of traditional marriage versus homoerotic and civil partnerships.  The Church of England’s leadership, despite their legal theological formularies, is obtuse and is politely whacked on the issue.  ABC Cranmer, however, in support of this effort and coalition for traditional marriage, has received a push-back from some pro-gay lobbyists in England.  It sounds like some legal or administrative action is in view.  That’s the story in His Grace’s blog-report.
This narrative is coming to the U.S.  These pro-gay lobbies don’t play.   They are extremely loud and angry.  The word "gay-fascism," as to legitmacy of use, is being reviewed.  The "hostility and hate rhetoric" coming from, for example, America's MSNBC channel has been staggering and enlightening.  I've begun calling MSNBC cable-hosts "press secretaries, stenographers, dictationists, salesmen, marionettes and ventriloquists" for Mr. Barak Obama. At my age, I never considered that this would need responses, but alas, we're in the "Anglican exile" with few expectations of ecclesiastical support in our quarters.  The British issues are fast becoming American ones.
          His Grace prudently states:
"Since His Grace does not dwell in Iran, North Korea, Soviet Russia,  Communist China or Nazi Germany, but occupies a place in the cyber-ether suspended somewhere between purgatory and paradise, he is minded to ignore that request. Who do these people think they are?"
We wish His Grace well in the days ahead and we recommend following his blog.

We reproduce Archbishop Cranmer’s post below at:  http://archbishop-cranmer.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/advertising-standards-authority.html .  We recommend giving "Archbishop Cranmer" regular reviews.

Advertising Standards Authority persecutes His Grace

Apparently there have been a number of complaints about one of the advertisements His Grace carried on behalf of the Coalition for Marriage. He has been sent all manner of official papers, formal documentation and threatening notices which demand answers to sundry questions by a certain deadline. He is instructed by the ‘Investigations Executive’ of this inquisition to keep all this confidential.

Since His Grace does not dwell in Iran, North Korea, Soviet Russia, Communist China or Nazi Germany, but occupies a place in the cyber-ether suspended somewhere between purgatory and paradise, he is minded to ignore that request. Who do these people think they are?

The advertisement in question is reproduced above. His Grace would like to make it clear to the ASA that he is reproducing this allegedly ‘offensive and homophobic’advertisement as an educative illustration of allegedly offensive and homophobic advertising; not as an offensive and homophobic advertisement per se. Naturally, His Grace apologises in advance to all those who find this educative illustration offensive and homophobic, for it is never his intention to be either offensive or homophobic. But those of you who do find it offensive and homophobic are free not to visit His Grace’s blog whenever you wish.

The specific complaint relates to:

c. An online ad, seen on the blog of ‘Archbishop Cranmer’, featured photos of couples on their wedding day on the first frame. The second frame stated “I do”. The third frame stated “70% of people* say keep marriage as it is ... (Source: ComRes poll for Catholic Voices)”. The final frame stated “Help us keep the true meaning of marriage. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION Click here ... Coalition for Marriage”.

The 'Issue' here is that 24 anonymous complainants, 'including the Jewish Gay & Lesbian Group' (doubtless disclosed to give weight to the allegations), challenged whether the claim '70% of people say keep marriage as it is'. However, His Grace is not required to respond to that point, since he did not conduct the research. But it transpires that 10 of these 24 complainants objected that the ads were ‘offensive’and ‘homophobic’, and he is requested to respond to these allegations ‘under CAP Code (Edition 12) rules 3.1 and 3.3 (Misleading advertising), 3.7 (Substantiation) and 4.1 (Harm and offence)’.

He is informed:

We intend to deal with the complaint as a formal investigation, which means it will be considered by the ASA Council. We will then draft a recommendation for the Council based on your response to us. Once the Council has made a decision, the adjudication will be published on our website.

...We require you to explain your rationale for the ad and comment specifically on the points raised in the attached complaint notification...

They need to see ‘robust documentary evidence to back the claims and a clear explanation from you of its relevance and why you think it substantiates the claims. It is not enough to send references to or abstracts of documents and papers without sending the reports in full and specifically highlighting the relevant parts explaining why they are relevant to the matter in hand’.

His Grace is asked specifically to respond to the allegation that this:

this:

this:

and this:

are ‘homophobic and offensive’.

His response must be in writing, ‘preferably by e-mail’, by 21 May (typed in bold). If His Grace is unable to comply, he must ‘explain why you are unable to respond sooner and agree a timetable for your response’.

And then we get: ‘If you are not the right person to deal with this letter please tell us and pass the letter on to someone who is.’ His Grace is minded to respond that inflicting such an inquisition on an already appallingly-persecuted long-dead archbishop is perhaps not appropriate. He could then ‘pass the letter on to someone’ he thinks might be the ‘right person’, wondering for how long he might string this out...

His Grace is further minded to respond that he has neither fear of nor hatred for the gay and lesbian community, though he is a little pissed off with 10 of them. They could easily have emailed His Grace with their complaint, and we could all have had a jolly good chinwag about the whole thing. Instead, they called in the Gestapo to censor the assertion that marriage is a life-long union between one man and one woman, in accordance with the teaching of the Established Church, the beliefs of its Supreme Governor, and the law of the land.

But to say so is now, apparently, ‘offensive and homophobic’.

Well, His Grace won’t be censored. He is further minded to provide the ASA with a copy of his well-publicised ‘bottom line’ (from the right-hand margin):

Freedom of speech must be tolerated, and everyone living in the United Kingdom must accept that they may be insulted about their own beliefs, or indeed be offended, and that is something which they must simply endure, not least because some suffer fates far worse...

Unless, of course, we are no longer free, our democracy is no longer liberal, and it is now an offence to express the moderate view of the majority and promote the orthodox teaching of the Church of England Established.

Anglican Curmudgeon: "Whispers, Murmurs and Rumours of a New Anglican World

Anglican Curmudgeon is carrying the following story.  See:  http://accurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2012/03/whispers-murmurs-and-rumours-of-new.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AnglicanCurmudgeon+%28Anglican+Curmudgeon%29.   He says the following:

Whispers, Murmurs and Rumours of a New Anglican World

The underground is abuzz in Anglican blogland. No details are available as yet for publication, only the general report that a major development will be ripe for announcement starting next Monday, March 19. Some of your most trusted (or alternatively, depending on your philosophy, most despised) commentators are rumored to be involved. The technical details, with the support of none but the very best in the business, are apparently awesome. But mum's the word for now, so as not to steal anyone's thunder.

So watch for what happens starting March 19 -- you heard it here first. Being Anglican is about to take on a whole new dimension, and the Anglican domain will never again be the same!

(GAFCON): Being Faithful, The Shape of Historic Anglicanism

A Commentary on the Jerusalem Declaration. For the full text, see:
www.latimertrust.org/download/bf.pdf

God willing, we shall write a review of this 162-page document.

One most memorable quote, p.14:

"We uphold the Thirty-nine Articles as containing the true doctrine of the Church agreeing with God's Word and as authoritative for today."

The Western Anglo-Catholics in the ACNA do not believe this and will not, like Jack Iker in Fort Worth or Keith Ackerman in Quincy, tolerate this perspective on the Articles, to wit, "...as authoritative for today." We believe that honesty and integrity should prevail. Both men cannot--in good conscience--accept this statement, confessionally.
