Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. December 2014: Alan Jacob's "Book of Common Prayer" at: http://www.amazon.com/Book-Common-Prayer-Biography-Religious/dp/0691154813/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417814005&sr=8-1&keywords=jacobs+book+of+common+prayer. January 2015: A.F. Pollard's "Thomas Cranmer and the English Reformation: 1489-1556" at: http://www.amazon.com/Thomas-Cranmer-English-Reformation-1489-1556/dp/1592448658/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420055574&sr=8-1&keywords=A.F.+Pollard+Cranmer. CJ. Mahaney of Sovereign Grace Ministries Steps Down: Some Resources

Two words for all of it: highly unedifying.

For international readers, C.J. Mahaney has been a popular Charismatic, Predestinarian Baptist in America--a Baptacostal is you will--who has garnered attention in connection with "Sovereign Grace Ministries."  He has stepped down from this consortium of Baptacostal Churches.  Various leaders have been associated with Mahaney including R.C. Sproul, Ligon Duncan, Mark Dever, Donald Carson, John MacArthur, Al Mohler and others.  See:  http://www.sovereigngraceministries.org/   Sovereign Grace appears to have about 102 churches in their federation.  Their internet, media and conference visibility appears to far outstrip their real influence.  The reading in the URLs is sad, introspective, judgmental and--like Pentecostalists--extremely individualist.  This goes to the heart of "celebrity culture," if not indicating some "cultic-like" orientations of authoritarianism. It's unedifying, but illuminating.  Egregiously and unacceptably, Dr. Ligon Duncan, President of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals (http://www.alliancenet.org/) unacceptably hosts C.J. Mahaney on the Board of Directors.  Mahaney, as we understand it, has a high school degree and nothing elese.  We'll never be able to support in any way "The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals."   Some resources are offered here from insiders on the "Mahaney Story."  The power of the email and internet is on full display here.  THERE IS A LEVEL OF SICKNESS AND DEPRAVITY THROUGHOUT.  In fact, the short version: avoid Mahaney-types, Sovereign Grace, Baptacostalists and their kind.  This requires psychiatric, pyschological and sociological skills in tandem with Biblical maturity.  We offer this not for our regular readers, but those interested in Charles Mahaney, as well as the Baptyerian Alliance of (Non) Confessing Evangelicals.  These are very, very unpleasant, lawless, and Gospelless readings.  The self-righteous legalism is wearisome.

Concluding Remarks Dated 8 Jun 2011

"C.J., I am genuinely grateful to the Triune God for the fruits of pride you've acknowledged, the changes you've made and the input you've received from others.  But,  I also remain deeply concerned because you and the Board of Direcgtors are unaffected on so many important fronts. This is alarming.  So here is my last attempt to focus your attention.  I hope you find it redemptive."

Sadly Mahaney still hasn't seen the depth of all of his sin.
