Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. Video Why Are You An Anglican? Phillip Jensen#When:12:23:44Z

Philip Jensen answers a question often put to him, "Why are you an Anglican?"

Philip gives three reasons: theology, mission and culture.

Anglicanism had a clearly defined Creed. Philip Jensen believes the same Gospel as is found in the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Prayer Book, the Homilies, and the ordinal. Prayer Book Anglicans are Protestant and Calvinist. Prayer Book Anglicans are Reformation-oriented. This was 3-centuries deep--however, the Tractarian movement of the 19th century, an interloping parasite, invaded Anglicanism. First reason to be an Anglican--Reformed theology, by conviction. Philip lists several good books on the Thirty-nine Articles--e.g. Boultbee, W.H.Griffith Thomas.

Secondly, Anglicanism is the home of evangelicals. Preaching salvation and justification by faith alone is revealed in the Scripture. This was and is the official belief of Anglicanism. World mission is built into Anglicanism. When ordained, one is to care and nourish the parishioners, but also to seek the lost.

Thirdly, culture. Sydney was founded and populated with criminals, a "prison colony." An Evangelical Anglican Chaplain was chosen by chosen by Wilberforce and Rev. John Newton (author of "Amazing Grace.") That evangelical and Anglican witness has continued to this very day. 20% of Sydney are self-identifying as Anglicans. One reason for the founding of Moore Theological College was the influence of Evangelical Anglicans. This provides a base to preach.

Three reasons to be an Anglican: theology, mission and culture.
