13 December. Day of Remembrance: 1662 Book of Common Prayer: Lucy,
Martyr
The
1662 BCP needs to clean up the virgin-part, to wit, nearwise all confessing
females are called virgins as if marriage was dishonorable. The BCP needs work. We remember her as a matter of church history
and not superstitious veneration like the bishops of Italy or
Constantinople. Nonetheless, she is
remembered in church history. We don’t
toss the BCP like some Reformed and Anabaptist radicals, but we reform and
conserve the better elements.
Lucy,
Virgin and Martyr (of Syracuse); a martyr, according to
tradition, in the 4th century, under Diocletian, by torture. Her legend is much
like those of St. Agatha and St. Agnes. -- December 13th.
