Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. 15 May 1265 A.D.: Dante Alighieri Born

15 May 1265 A.D. Dante Alighieri Born

Dante Alighieri (1265 to 1321)

Roman Church

First Christian Epic.

Birth of Dante Alighieri, Italian poet, in Florence. He became a soldier in 1290. About 1302, Dante lost his property and was forced into exile by political changes. He never saw his wife or home again. Acclaimed world-wide for his literary achievements, Dante is remembered best as the author of The Divine Comedy. It is called a comedy because it has a happy ending, in contrast to dramatic tragedy, and the word "divine" was added later by admiring critics. It is a poetic view of the moral universe describing the three conditions of man: sin, repentance, and salvation; or Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. The writing is considered history's first great Christian epic.
