Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. Explain in at least 300 words why the Archbishop of Canterbury is important and what becoming Archbishop of Canterbury would mean to you.

The important office of Archbishop of Canterbury has been important to the Church of England and to other Anglicans around the world for well over 100 years. Consider the number of important Anglicans who have held this important office throughout its history.

Past Archbishops of Canterbury have included important men like Thomas A. Becket, Thomas Cranmer, William Laud and Rowan Williams along with such legendary names as Augustine, Anselm O. Canterbury, Cosmo Lang, William Temple and Michael Ramsey.

So as anyone can plainly see, the Archbishop of Canterbury has been an important figure not only in the Church of England but, just as importantly, for Anglicans wherever in the world they live. And it is just as important to remember the reason why this is, namely the Protestant Reformation, one of the most important events in all of Christian history.

Indeed, the importance of the Reformation, when the Pope declared his independence from one of the most important Archibishops of Canterbury, Henry T. Eighth, cannot be overstressed. Because it made an already-important office into an even more important office and made the Archbishop of Canterbury into the important figure that he is today.

What would holding such an important office like the Archbishop of Canterbury mean to me? Obviously, holding such an important office as the Archbishop of Canterbury would mean that there would be many important responsibilities that I would be responsible for.

But the chance to hold an important office like the Archbishop of Canterbury would also mean that I would be able accomplish many important accomplishments, the kinds of accomplishments that I would not be able to accomplish if I did not hold an office as important as the Archbishop of Canterbury.

And that is why the office of Archbishop of Canterbury is such an important office and what the holding the office of Archbishop of Canterbury would mean to me.
