Reformed Churchmen

We are Confessional Calvinists and a Prayer Book Church-people. In 2012, we remembered the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer; also, we remembered the 450th anniversary of John Jewel's sober, scholarly, and Reformed "An Apology of the Church of England." In 2013, we remembered the publication of the "Heidelberg Catechism" and the influence of Reformed theologians in England, including Heinrich Bullinger's Decades. For 2014: Tyndale's NT translation. For 2015, John Roger, Rowland Taylor and Bishop John Hooper's martyrdom, burned at the stakes. Books of the month. December 2014: Alan Jacob's "Book of Common Prayer" at: http://www.amazon.com/Book-Common-Prayer-Biography-Religious/dp/0691154813/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417814005&sr=8-1&keywords=jacobs+book+of+common+prayer. January 2015: A.F. Pollard's "Thomas Cranmer and the English Reformation: 1489-1556" at: http://www.amazon.com/Thomas-Cranmer-English-Reformation-1489-1556/dp/1592448658/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1420055574&sr=8-1&keywords=A.F.+Pollard+Cranmer. Carl on the "Creeds" in divine worship. Incomprehensibly poor. He confesses he is an "English non-Conformist." He confesses discomfort with the Creeds. Quite poor. No kidding. Anglicans in Sydney sponsor this?

Comments on "expository preaching." No longer do we have it we are informed. Carl's wife, from the Isle of Lewis, northwestern Scotland, the Isle of Lewis, was well-catechetized. So, Carl? Catechism for lads and lasses? "F" for strategic and tactical response! (And I am an Anglican!) Big picture: memorize the shorter catechism and, for adults, Q.1-90. Tell the listeners the value of this.

This much, Carl addresses Catechetical Preaching on the Heidelberg Catechism by way of evening service. "Be subversive" about it with elders, e.g. "let us...?" Puleeze. Do it, Carl. Of course, this is needed. This is painful to hear. "Subversive" with the elders? This catechism, the HC, should be memorized by lads and lasses. Tell the listeners the value of this.

Ah..good question from the floor of auditors. "Word triumphing over the visual." Gutenberg Press. Rise of trade, records and need for written records. No answer and on to the next question. Huh? English Reformation and iconclasm? No answers. This is an historian...no wonder Presbyterians have no concept of the English Reformation. They never had that in my day either, 79-81.' Carl reveals his position here. Not one word about Cranmer, Ridley or others.

We expect nothing more here and will turn him off.

A for effort. D for substance. F for significance.

For the reader, don't spend the 60-minutes of your time on this. Attend WTS for specific courses. Carl--projectedly--will be better as he labours in his field of history--not issues of statesmanship.
