Athelm is said to have been a monk of Glastonbury and to have
been raised to the episcopate in 909. In that year, the two dioceses of Wessex
were increased to five. Wells became the seat of one of the new bishoprics and
Athelm its first Bishop.
He was translated to Canterbury, in AD 914 and died in AD
926.
