1837 – Michigan became the 26th state of the US. By the early 1830s,
Michigan had enough residents to apply for statehood. However, approval of this
measure languished for several years due to a boundary dispute (the Toledo War)
with Ohio, with both sides claiming a strip of land around Toledo. Ultimately,
Congress awarded the “Toledo Strip” to Ohio, but as compensation, granted the
entire Upper Peninsula to Michigan.
