Albert Barnes was born in Rome, N.Y. Becoming a Presbyterian at age 24,
he pastored a church in Morristown, N.J., and then began a 40-year ministry at
the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. In 1823 he began his work on the
11 -volume, Notes on the New Testament which took him 19 years to complete. The
completed Notes, a 27-volume set, sold over a million copies.
