Historical
Augustine was born in 1516 in Bar-le-Duc
at 54 rue des Ducs de Bar.
Very young orphan, he was entrusted by his guardian to the community of
Augustinian Bar. Coming from a
family of lawyers in the court of accounts Bar, he should, as the eldest,
inherit property, law books and the burden of his father. But it was his younger
brother, Martin The Marlorat, which will take the load and the family property.
Augustine later said at his
trial, he had not defrocked, since doing "enter into monkhood" was
maneuvering to seize his property.
In the
community of Augustinian, he studied the scriptures, languages and
humanities took his vows in 1524. Augustinian monk, scholar, late preacher,
priest, he converted to the Reformed cause for having too close theses that
intended to fight.
After giving up his status and
his dependents, he must flee to Geneva. It
is first proofreader, including Hebrew. He
began work at Calvin, commentator, humanist. He befriends Theodore Beza and became pastor in
Vevey and Crissey.
When Protestants call Rouen in 1561, because of lack of pastors and preachers,
he took the risk to go to the kingdom of France.
Augustin then applied to the regent Catherine de Medici his Admonition
to the queen, mother of Roy by those who persecute for the Word of God which
they make because of the main articles of religion, and who are now in dispute.
"Catherine de Medici then meet at Poissy
Saint-Germain, seminars, reformed and unreformed between where Augustin
Marlorat present, including in January 1562, to meet the objections of the
Sorbonne.
This research work conditions "living together" well lead to
recognition by Catherine de 'Medici, of the "new religion", the edict
of January 1562. But on 1 March, just two months after , was the massacre of
Vassy. Catholics encouraged by Guise, to
regain lost ground, take up arms to make themselves masters of the cities
acquired Protestants. In late October 1562, Augustin Marlorat when taking Rouen,
will be captured, tortured, hanged and beheaded.
His work consists of comments, index for editions
of the New Testament, from Genesis of the Holy Bible
Prophecies of Isaiah, the Book of Job. He has
collaborated with Calvin, by Scripture quotations and commentary, the Institutes
of the Christian religion. He composed a Thesaurus of Scripture (a
copy of which is located in the library of Bar-le-Duc in the fund Dannreuther).
He also left us one hundred and fifty prayers or
prayers in French prose that is at the end of each of the hundred and fifty
Psalms of David translated into rhymes by Clement Marot and Theodore Beza ( Geneva Psalter ).
Commemorating the 450th
anniversary of the martyrdom of Augustine Marlorat
October 30, 2012, the anniversary of the martyrdom
of Augustine, the parish of Bar-le-Duc Saint Dizier is found in the birthplace
of Augustine around Mr. and Mrs. Bonnet, current owners. We were
sixty people gathered in the small courtyard of the house where we followed a
well-documented historical account of Madame Bonnet: Augustine, reformed and
humanist. We then joined the Marlorat room at the rectory to read the
prayers of Augustine. A small parish team was mobilized to prepare
for this meeting, which took place in three stages:
- an illustrated presentation of the Psalter Geneva
- an overview of the prayers,
- an analysis of prayer psalms 8, 23,69, 19 and 101.
