Aelfsige succeeded St. Aelfheah (Alphege the Bald) as Bishop of Winchester in AD 951. Seven years later, he was elevated to the position of Archbishop of Canterbury. However, he died of cold, whilst crossing the Alps, on his way to Rome to receive the pallium.
