Ministry of Defence
The funeral of The Rt. Hon. The Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven LG OM PC FRS will take place on Wednesday 17 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
The Bishop of London, The Rt. Hon. & Rt. Rev. Richard Chartres, will preside at the memorial service for the “Iron Lady” Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990.
The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby stated after this is that his death was announced on April: “It was with sadness that I heard the news of the death of Baroness Thatcher and my prayers are with her son and daughter, her grandchildren, family and friends. It is right that today we give thanks for a life devoted to public service, acknowledging also the faith that inspired and sustained her.”
Buckingham Palace has announce announced that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will attend the ceremony -- the most elaborate memorial service held in Britain since the 2002 funeral of the Queen Mother. It will also the first funeral of former Prime Minister attended by the Queen since the death of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.
The coffin will be drawn on a gun carriage of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery from St Clement Danes Church (the church of the Royal Air Force) in the Strand to St Paul’s, with the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force lining the route, the Ministry of Defense reports.
Outside the Cathedral a Guard of Honour and Band of 1st Battalion Welsh Guards will be formed up. While the Ceremonial Procession takes place, the Honourable Artillery Company will fire Processional Minute Guns from Tower Wharf, HM Tower of London.
Carrying the coffin into the Cathedral will be a bearer party made up of members of the ships, units and squadrons that served during the Falklands Campaign. Positioned on the steps will be a guard made up of 18 soldiers, sailors and airmen and a contingent of Pensioners of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Following the ceremony the body will be cremated and a private ceremony held for members of the family.
