Froude was one smug puppy. He was a product of an era in which Protestantism had begun its intellectual suicide (liberalism), when romantics believed that medieval Rome was their true home, and before evolutionary materialism had unleashed the horrors of the 20th century. He exposes some of the problems that are still with us, but otherwise he is of little help.
