Comfortable Words: Bede: the exemplary conduct of St Augustine of Canterbury

THE mission of St Augustine of Canterbury, whom we remember today, came at the urging of perhaps the last truly great Bishop of Rome, Pope St Gregory I.

Augustine and his assistants arrived on the Isle of Thanet in 597, and were given Canterbury as their base by the King of Kent, Ethelbert.
