Calvin’s Institutes, 4.7.8
Observations:
1. The subject under review: The origin and growth of Romanism until it raised itself to a height that the freedom of Christ’s True Churches were oppressed and doctrinal restraint were removed. We’ve seen the modest position of Rome in the Councils of Nicaea, Ephesus, Council of Chalcedon and the Fifth Council of Constantinople. We’ve seen that the pompous and arrogant titles for the bishop of Rome were not embraced, but were repudiated as late as the 7th century. We’ve seen, thus far, the limits of Roman jurisdiction in relation to emperors and metropolitans.
2. We now look at the authority of convening synods.
3. Every metropolitan had the duty of convening synods periodically.
4. Rome had no say in the matter. Where’s the Petrine fiction of universal jurisdiction?
5. Julius (Rome) expostulated with the Synod of Antioch, to wit, that it had convened without—as much as even calling—inviting him.
6. Calvin does not deny that Rome was a leading episcopal see, but he—rightly—denies ubi Petrus, ibi Ecclesia.
Correlations:
1. Study of church governments.
2. Larger study of Papal growth and dominion, e.g. Hildebrand.
Interpretation:
Ubi Petrus, ibi Ecclesia is fiction and Calvin continues to bounce Popes around the ring relentlessly.
Application:
1. Teach Romanists one thing, among others, this fiction. Tell them it is a shame, hoax and lie to continue the "gig" of Romanists' claims. Calvin is bouncing the Popes about the head without mercy and to our great delight--since we abhor lying lips and liars. Off with them!!
2. Read, mark, learn, write and disseminate farthest, soonest and as practicable. Petrine supremacy is one huge lie.
3. Continue the daily and evening prayers, “Remove lying lips from me, O LORD, like these liars in Rome.
4. Chastise and chide the "double-minded" who've made peace with this institution of lies, like Packer and the other "children of our times." It gets clearer as we go.
